A 297.4 km long long- distance hiking trail leads through southern Lower Austria along the Viennese Alpine arc, divided into 19 stages . All the hills and mountains of the Viennese Alps can be explored in stages using this path. The hiking trail starts in Katzelsdorf , on the Burgenland-Lower Austrian border, where the first panorama picture awaits you at the foot of the Rosaliengebirge . It continues from Bad Erlach through the Bucklige Welt. The historically significant route uses numerous castles, ruins and fortified churches to give an impression of the time when the area was fought over as the border to the east.

From Kirchschlag the hiking route leads through the health resort Bad Schönau , followed by an ascent into the Wechsel area. In Hochneukirchen-Gschaidt , you can look back at the walk from the Hutwisch lookout point. Then continue east to Semmering, where the declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site Semmering Railway is on display. Between the 19th and 21st centuries, the Semmering was particularly popular with artists and is still considered a center of the Austrian theater world. B. Culture.Summer.Semmering.

The hiking trail leads slowly from the tranquil landscape to the high alpine terrain of the Rax and the Schneeberg. The entire Viennese Alpine arc can now be skied. Before that, there were five routes that are particularly recommended for experienced hikers:

  • Bucklige Welt: You start in Bad Schönau, where you follow the main road to reach the lookout point at Hutwisch. At an altitude of 896 m, hikers can enjoy a beautiful view of the Schneeberg and to Lake Neusiedl.
  • Wechsel: The 15 km long hiking route begins in Mönichkirchen and leads over the Vorauer Schwaig to the Niederwechsel. Via the Steinerne Stiege it goes back to the Mönichkirchner Schwaig.
  • Semmering: This hiking trail starts at Semmering train station and first leads along the track to the Wolfsbergkogel train station. From the double equestrian center you can then enjoy the beautiful panoramic view and watch trains passing by. A few minutes walk after the Doppelreiterwarte one arrives at the 20-Schilling-Blick, which offers the same view that was previously shown on the 20- Schilling note. Over the Fleischmannbrücke, past the Iron Cross, it goes to Breitenstein , where the hiking route ends. You can return to the starting point by train.
  • Rax: The Rax hiking trail is particularly recommended for families, as you only travel in sub-alpine heights and have hardly any inclines. This “hut hopping on the Rax”, ie hiking from hut to hut, is one of the most popular hiking routes. You start at the Raxseilbahn, which takes you to the mountain station, which is located at 1547 m above sea level. After approx. 45 minutes you will reach the first hut, the Ottohaus , which is known for its 4,000 m 2 alpine garden. • Schneeberg: The hiking route on the Schneeberg begins at the mountain station of the Schneebergbahn, from where it continues to the Damböckhaus and from there to the summit cross of the Waxriegel. From the viewpoints of the highest peaks of the Schneeberg and the Rax, it goes back to the mountain station. Due to the relatively easy walkway, this route is particularly popular with families. The children's mountain world and the highest gallery in Austria offer additional variety.
