Tarxien [ tɐrˈʃɪːn ] (or Ħal Tarxien ) is a small village in the south-eastern part of Malta . The name probably comes from a combination of two words: Tarzin, an Arabic word for group of trees, and Tirix , which means a large stone, similar to those used to build the Neolithic temples. The village's motto is Tyrii Genure Coloni - "The Phoenicians created me".

Church life

Today 8,627 people live in the settlement (as of December 31, 2018). An important part of Tarxien's culture is the Feast of the Annunciation , a religious holiday at the end of May. It is celebrated with large fireworks . Many residents spend the summer on the coast, which reduces the number of inhabitants to only about two thirds of that in the colder months. The feast of “Our Lady of the Doctrine” (Maria) is celebrated on the third Sunday of July.

Former Prime Minister of Malta Dominic Mintoff was a retired man in Tarxien.

Community partnerships

Tarxien has partnerships with the Italian municipality of Ovindoli and with the Bulgarian city of Veliko Tarnowo .

Buildings

The oldest temple is dated to 2800 BC. There are many statues and reliefs of animals in the temples, e.g. B. goats - for which Malta is known - and pigs. The best known is the statue of a fat woman about two and a half meters high who is believed to represent a mother goddess. There are many of these statues scattered in many temples and they are said to be a symbol of fertility.
