(9902) Kirkpatrick is a major inner belt asteroid discovered by Italian-American astronomer Paul G. Comba on July 3, 1997 at the Prescott Observatory in Prescott , Arizona ( IAU code 684). Unconfirmed sightings of the asteroid had already taken place several times: on December 11, 1988 at the Argentinian Felix Aguilar Observatory (1988 AR 2 ), on September 9, 1994 at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory in Tautenburg (1994 RK 29 ) and on September 13, 1994 March 1996 at the remote station of the Steward Observatory on Kitt Peak (1996 EJ 16 ).

The mean diameter of the asteroid was calculated to be 3.611 km (± 0.166) and the albedo to be 0.179 (± 0.022).

Mean solar distance ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid correspond to the Flora family, a large group of asteroids named after (8) Flora . Asteroids of this family move in a 4: 9 orbital resonance with the planet Mars around the sun . The group is also called the Ariadne family, after the asteroid (43) Ariadne .

(9902) Kirkpatrick was named on April 2, 1999 after the US harpsichordist and professor Ralph Kirkpatrick .
