U-23
The U-23 started in 1992 under the name “1. FSV Mainz 05 Amateure ”in the lowest league and after four championships in a row in 1997 reached the Association League Southwest . After a third place in 1998, the team rose in 1999 under coach Manfred Lorenz in the then Oberliga Südwest , in which they came fourth in the first year. After Lorenz's departure, Uwe Stöver took over the position of coach and led the team to a seventh place in the table for the first time to win the Southwest Cup (1-0 in the final against VfR 1919 Grünstadt). Nevertheless, Stöver left the 05er at the end of the season. The new coach was the British Colin Bell , with whom the 05er won the Southwest Cup four times between 2002 and 2005 and rose to the Regionalliga Süd in 2003 . In the DFB Cup, the team reached two penalties during this period (2: 4 against Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2002 and 3: 4 against Karlsruher SC in 2004 ), but never made it to the second round. After relegation from the Regionalliga in 2005, the former professional Peter Neustädter was the new coach and managed to get promoted again and stay up in the next two seasons in the 2007/08 season.
In summer 2010, the U-23 was integrated into the Mainz youth training center and taken over by the Swiss Martin Schmidt . In the 2013/14 season, the 05er took third place behind SC Freiburg and SG Sonnenhof Großaspach . Since the Freiburg team canceled their second team, the U-23 moved into the promotion games and prevailed against TSG Neustrelitz (2-0, 3-1). Thus, they made the leap into the 3rd division as the fifth reserve team. On February 17, 2015, the previous U-19 coach Sandro Schwarz succeeded Martin Schmidt, who had been promoted to Bundesliga coaching, and at the end of the season kept the class two points ahead of the relegation places. Since the 2017/18 season, due U-23 has been back in the Regionalliga Südwest. Bartosch Gaul has been the coach since the 2018/19 season .

Since then she has regularly achieved top positions. In 2009, the team took second place under coach Thomas Tuchel and moved into the final round of the German championship, in which they beat Werder Bremen (0: 1, 3: 0) in the semifinals and Borussia Dortmund (2: 1 ) in the final ) prevailed and became a master.
Tuchel's successor was Stefan Sartori in September 2009, who led the 05 U-19s to third place in the 2011/12 season. In the summer of 2013, the former Mainz Bundesliga professional Sandro Schwarz took over the coaching position and finished fifth in his first season. When Schwarz was promoted to coach of the third division team in February 2015, Stefan Hofmann stepped in as interim coach and reached third place with the team at the end of the season. Mainz football
In public, Mainz football is often associated with heart, enthusiasm, passion and emotions. The football training in the youth performance center is based on the concept of Wolfgang Frank , who between 1995 and 2000 was the professional coach of the 2nd Bundesliga with a short interruption . Frank was one of the first coaches in Germany to use a four-man defensive chain, which revolutionized football in the state capital. This was continued and refined by Jürgen Klopp , who as coach of the professionals between 2001 and 2008 supplemented the game idea with terms such as “ball-oriented defense behavior” and “pressing”. Thomas Tuchel expanded Mainz football between 2009 and 2014 with elements such as forward defense, counter-pressing and ball possession football.
