The 1980/81 season was the 24th season of the 1st division , the highest Danish ice hockey division . AaB Ishockey became champions for the first time in the club's history . The Esbjerg IK relegated to the second division.

In the main round, each of the eight teams played a total of 28 games. The first place in the main round won the championship title. The last placed in the main round rose to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
