The Alliance of Small Iceland States (AOSIS, German  Alliance of Small Island States ) is an alliance of small island and low-lying coastal states around the world are facing similar development tasks and all face similar environmental problems. Rising sea levels and other effects of global warming are particularly troubling for most AOSIS members. The alliance emerged from the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in 1990 and represents approximately 28% of the developing world , 19% of the full UN membership and 1% of the world's population .

The current seat is the Belize Embassy to the United Nations ( New York City ).

The chief negotiator is Amjad Abdulla from the Maldives .

Job profile

In the United Nations system, AOSIS mostly acts as the voice of the Small Island Developing States . The group currently has 39 members and 5 observing states. 37 countries are members of the UN.

The main concern of the AOSIS is to combat global warming , which directly threatens its members through rising sea levels, increased storms, coral death and the like. At the annual conferences of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol , the AOSIS representatives are regularly among the most ardent reminders who call for an effective climate protection policy. In the negotiations that led to the conclusion of the Kyoto Protocol in 1997, the AOSIS countries demanded a 20% reduction in greenhouse gases from the western industrialized nations by 2005.

The small island states played a key role in the negotiations on the Paris Agreement , which was adopted in 2015 . They played a leading role in ensuring that the global community of states committed to making efforts to limit global warming to below 1.5 ° C. The AOSIS states also pushed the agreements on loss and damage significantly.

Some AOSIS members are also in the group of least developed countries ( Least Developed Countries , in short: LDC s) active.

Chairperson

The first chairman of the AOSIS was Vanuatu's Ambassador Robert Van Lierop (1991-1994), followed by the Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago , Annette des Iles (1994-1997), Tuiloma Neroni Slade , the Ambassador of Samoa (1997-2002) and the Ambassador of Mauritius, Jagdish Koonjul (2002–2006). 2006: Julian Robert Hunte , Ambassador of St. Lucia to the United Nations, 2006–2009: Angus Friday (Grenada), 2009–2011: Dessima Williams (Grenada), 2012–2014: Marlene Moses (Nauru), since 2015: Ahmed Sareer (Maldives).
