ASEA-UNINET (ASEAN European Academic University Network) is a university network consisting of European and Southeast Asian universities, which has set itself the goal of promoting continuous internationalization and cooperation in the context of research and education. ASEA-UNINET was founded in 1994 by universities in the following countries: Austria, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Today the ASEA-UNINET university network consists of 83 universities from 17 countries.

Beginnings and goals

The basis for this university network was formed by informal contacts between the University of Innsbruck and various Thai universities that go back to the 1970s. Official visits followed and, in the 1980s, the first partnerships between individual universities were finally concluded. These include partnership agreements between the University of Innsbruck and the universities of Chulalongkorn and Mahidol in Bangkok, as well as between the University of Vienna and Chiang Mai and the partnership between the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna and the Kasetsart University in Bangkok. In 1992 the universities of Innsbruck, Chulalongkorn, Vienna and Chiang Mai signed a joint cooperation agreement. Another partnership agreement was concluded with the Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta in 1990, and relations with Vietnamese universities were also continuously expanded. In addition, relationships between Austrian partner institutions in Thailand and other countries in the region were established and thus the idea of ASEA-UNINET was born.

With the aim of unifying all these bilateral partnership agreements in one multilateral partnership, the initiator of the ASEA-UNINET network, Bernd Michael Rode , organized the first ASEA-UNINET conference in Ho Chi Minh City in December 1994. At this conference Universities from Austria, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam took part to determine the organization and necessary infrastructure of the newly founded university network and to define the following common goals:

  • Facilitating and promoting cooperation between academic institutions in the areas of teaching, research and staff and student exchanges (e.g. joint research projects, exchange programs for staff and students, graduate programs and postgraduate training).
  • Promotion of scientific, cultural and human relationships as well as personal contacts.
  • Promotion and initiation of projects, within the framework of common research priorities and interests, for the benefit of all participating faculties, employees and students.
  • Support in the formation of resource communities for scientific activities between the member institutes.
  • Facilitation of the cooperation and formation of cooperation between universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations and economic operators in the context of projects in the fields of education, science, technology and art that are related to the countries of the member universities.
  • Provide a forum for discussion of the continuous progress of projects.
  • Provision of expertise and initiatives as a competence network for companies with European-Southeast Asian relationships.

organization

Each member university has an ASEA-UNINET coordinator, each country has a national coordinator and each continent has a regional coordinator. The President is elected at the General Assembly for a period of approximately 1 ½ years.

In order to achieve the common goals and to secure the necessary funding, all member universities work together with both inter-university units and national governments. Project contributions are made by the member universities on the basis of fair compensation, measured against the economic and financial situation. Additional financial support is sought from regional (e.g. EU, ASEAN) and international organizations. We also work with companies and the private sector, in accordance with the project guidelines.

Focus areas

Almost all areas of scientific and economic interest are represented in ASEA-UNINET. The current priorities of the cooperation include:

  • Science and technology
  • Economics and Social Sciences
  • Health, pharmacy and medicine
  • Humanities, culture and music
