The University of Khon Kaen ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย ขอนแก่น , RTGS : Mahawitthayalai Khon Kaen; English Khon Kaen University , KKU for short) is a university in Khon Kaen in northeast Thailand (Isan). It serves as a center for tertiary education in the northeast of Thailand .

history

During the reign of King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII), the government of Prime Minister Phibunsongkhram had a plan to improve education across the country. Initially, Ubon Ratchathani was intended as a location for a university, but this was prevented by the outbreak of World War II . Thailand sided with Japan and could not make a major effort in Isan. This did not change until 1960, during the reign of the dictatorial Prime Minister Sarit Thanarat . Sarit himself grew up in Isan and took particular care to develop the region.

In 1962, an institution for continuing education in engineering and agriculture was proposed. It was established in Khon Kaen as an Institute of Technology (Khon Kaen Institute of Technology). Thereafter, the institution was renamed the University of Northeast Thailand.

In 1963 the campus was built four kilometers northwest of Khon Kaen, which covered around 3.3 square kilometers. In 1965, the Prime Minister's Office officially changed the university's name to Khon Kaen University, as universities were now being established in other cities in the northeast.

In 2014, Khon Kaen University was the first major public institution in northeast Thailand to have its sign at the main entrance written in Tai Noi, which is traditionally used in the Lao language , in addition to Thai script . This is a symbol of the Northeast's own regional identity. The policy of " Thaiization " had long suppressed regional languages.
