The Mahidol University ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย มหิดล , RTGS Mahawitthayalai Mahidon [ Maha wíttʰájaːlaj máʔhìʔdon ]) is one of the most prestigious public universities in Thailand.

It emerged from the first medical school in the country in 1943 and was initially called the "University of Medical Science". In 1969 it was expanded into a full university and was given its current name after Prince Mahidol Adulyadej . Its headquarters are in Salaya in the Phutthamonthon district of the Nakhon Pathom province , about 20 km west of the capital Bangkok . It also maintains several campuses within the city as well as branch offices in the provinces of Kanchanaburi , Nakhon Sawan and Amnat Charoen . It runs two university hospitals, the Siriraj and Ramathibodi hospitals, both of which are among the largest hospitals in Bangkok.

history

Mahidol University emerged from Thailand's oldest institute for higher education. This was founded in 1889 by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as a medical school (Rongrian Phaetyakon) at the Siriraj Hospital . The government of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram combined this with several other medical institutes in 1943 to form the “University of Medical Science” (Mahawitthayalai Phaetyasat) , at the same time as the Kasetsart University, which specializes in agriculture, and the Silpakorn University, which specializes in the arts . With the expansion from a university specializing exclusively in medicine to a full university in 1969, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) named the university after his father, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej , who is regarded in Thailand as the father of modern medicine and public health care. Today Mahidol University offers 551 different degrees and courses (132 of which are taught in English).
