Aase Nordmo Løvberg (born June 10, 1923 in Målselv ; † January 25, 2013 in Lillehammer ), known in German-speaking countries as Aase Nordmo-Lövberg , was a Norwegian opera singer with a soprano voice .

Life

Nordmo-Lövberg was born in the Norwegian town of Målselv near Narvik in the province of Troms . As a child she sang in the church choir and performed as a soloist at church concerts. She completed a vocal training with Hjaldis Ingebjart in Oslo . In 1948 she made her debut as a concert singer at a university concert. In 1951 she made her debut as an opera singer on the stage at the Oslo Opera House ; she sang the role of Imogen in the world premiere of the opera Cymbeline by Arne Eggen . In 1952 she made a guest appearance at the Konserthuset in Stockholm . She was then committed to the Royal Stockholm Opera in 1953 . Her first role was Elisabeth in Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser . She was a permanent member of the ensemble there until 1970.

Nordmo-Lövberg sang mainly roles of the youthful-dramatic soprano on stage. She was considered an important Wagner singer. In addition to numerous Wagner roles, she performed at the Royal Stockholm Opera, including as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni , in the title role of the opera Aida , as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera , Desdemona in Otello , Elisabeth von Valois in Don Carlos , Micaëla in Carmen , as the title heroine Floria Tosca in Tosca and as Marschallin in the opera Der Rosenkavalier .

Between 1957 and 1965 she made regular guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera . In April 1957 she made her debut there under the musical direction of Herbert von Karajan as Sieglinde in Wagner's Die Walküre . Karajan had committed Nordmo-Lövberg to Vienna specifically for this role . In addition to the role of Sieglinde (1957–1965), she sang Elisabeth in Tannhäuser (1957/1958), Amelia in Un ballo in maschera (1960) and Leonore in Fidelio (1958; 1960) at the Vienna State Opera .

In 1959 she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City with the role of Elsa in Wagner's opera Lohengrin . She also appeared there until 1961 as Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , as Sieglinde and as Leonore. In 1960 she sang at the Bayreuth Festival , where she appeared as Elsa, Sieglinde and as the third Norn in Wagner's Götterdämmerung .

She also made guest appearances at the Oslo Opera House (from 1960; there again in 1970 as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer ), at the Great Theater (Stora Teatern) in Gothenburg (1963 as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser ; 1967 as Tosca), at the Royal Copenhagen Opera (1963 / 1964 as Leonore in Fidelio ), at the opera house in Cagliari (1965, as Elisabeth in Tannhäuser ). She sang at the Covent Garden Opera , at La Scala in Milan , at the Rome Opera House as well as in Hamburg and Munich .

In addition to her career as an opera singer, Nordmo-Lövberg worked extensively as a concert singer. She gave concerts in Philadelphia and toured the United States with the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra .

In 1970 she gave up her singing career and taught as a music teacher and singing teacher in Oslo. From 1973 she was a professor for singing at the Oslo Music Academy (Da Norges musikkhøgskole NMH). From 1978 to 1981 she was artistic director of the Oslo Opera House.

Nordmo-Lövberg has received several awards and honors for her artistic merits. She was a knight and commander of the Order of Saint Olav, 1st class. She received the Swedish North Star Order (Kungliga Nordstjärneorden) and numerous other honors.

Nordmo-Lövberg died at the age of 89 in Lillehammer, where she lived for many years.

There are only relatively few recordings with Nordmo-Lövberg. A recital with her was published at Columbia . For EMI she worked in 1957, under the musical direction of Otto Klemperer , alongside Christa Ludwig , Waldemar Kmentt and Hans Hotter on a record of Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony .

However, there are live recordings of operas and radio recordings . Numerous performances, especially from the Bayreuth Festival. Her appearances as Elsa ( Lohengrin ) and Sieglinde ( Die Walküre ), each from 1960, are documented in this way for posterity. In the meantime, these performances have also been published on CD, often under various different record labels.
