Africa Cup 2000 / qualification

The qualification for the Africa Cup 2000 in Ghana and Nigeria was held in two rounds, a preliminary elimination in the knockout system and a main round with seven groups of four teams each. Due to a change in the hosts of the final round, a playoff round with three teams was also played for the last free place in the final round.

Attendees

A total of 47 teams registered to take part in the Africa Cup, which was originally supposed to take place in Zimbabwe . The intended hosts Zimbabwe and defending champions Egypt qualified directly for the finals.

Of the remaining 45 teams, eleven had bye tickets for the main round, the remaining 34 teams determined the remaining 17 participants in the main round in a knockout round with home and away games. The seven group winners and seven runners-up in the main round should qualify for the final round.

However, the original host Zimbabwe decided not to host the final round. On March 15, 1999, Ghana and Nigeria were chosen as substitute hosts. As a result, both teams were automatically qualified for the 2000 finals. At this point Ghana was already playing in Group 1 and Nigeria in Group 5. Qualification was canceled for both teams and their games were taken out of the ranking. For this, Zimbabwe had to play in a playoff round with the runners-up of Groups 1 and 5, which have now been reduced to three teams, for a place in the final round, where Senegal prevailed.
