The agra complex

location

The agra is the coherent set of parks and event areas between the cities of Leipzig and Markkleeberg. The agra was named in the middle of the 20th century, when the entire agra became the site of the garden and agricultural exhibition of the same name "agra" for more than 50 years . At that time the area was also called the agra exhibition park . "Agra" at agra was visited by up to 750,000 trade fair participants every year. Since 1960, part of the agra has been converted into a park, the agra-Park . The largest part of the remainder of the old agra , the agra exhibition center , which lies outside the agra park, continues to serve trade fair, exhibition and event purposes with three exhibition halls and an extensive outdoor area.

The agra can thus (as of 2016) be divided into two large and separate areas:

agra park
Park impression in the Goethepark section
  • agra-Park : In the north, west and south of the agra lies the agra-Park, whereby it is cut into two parts (east and west) by the Pleiße and above all by the four-lane B 2 . In the north and west, the agra-Park contains the Herfurth-Park, the Dölitzer Holz and the Goethepark. The border in the east is the Mühlpleiße . In the south are the Markkleeberger Festanger and an area between the Kleine Pleiße and the Pleiße. The agra-Park is roughly half located in the urban areas of Leipzig and Markkleeberg and is managed jointly by the city administrations of both cities.
  • agra exhibition grounds : the agra exhibition grounds with the exhibition halls are located in the east of agra, bounded by Mühlpleiße in the west and Bornaische Strasse in the east. The agra exhibition grounds are located almost exclusively in the city of Leipzig. At the Mühlpleiße the agra exhibition center borders the agra park. The agra exhibition grounds are managed by the city of Leipzig and the companies commissioned by it, and since 2020 this has been TNC mice & nice GmbH.
  • Other agra areas : Other agra areas occur in the north and south of the agra exhibition grounds (east of both the Mühlpleiße and the Kleine Pleiße).

In the medium and long term (as of 2017) the agra-Park is to grow at the expense of the other areas. The agra exhibition center will initially be continued as a trade fair and exhibition site, but new usage concepts are also being considered.

Overview

Temple of the Muses

The basic concept of the agra-Park is based on the landscape park of Paul Herfurth from the 19th century. Meadows , ponds , ponds , groups of trees and park architecture alternate with some buildings used for events and documentary purposes (including several museums and collections ). There are also some buildings on and in the park that are used for gastronomic purposes. Companies, associations and people offer guided tours and courses around the agra-Park. Because of this commitment and the park concept, the park was also given the nickname University in the Green . For the years 2015 and 2019 the agra-Park had also (unsuccessfully) applied for the State Horticultural Show Saxony .

Monuments

Ante temple

Practically the entire agra-Park is a listed building as a whole . There are also a large number of cultural monuments within the park , including above all the White House from 1897 (former Herfurth Villa) and the Torhaus Dölitz from 1672. In addition, there is the Torhaus Markkleeberg from 1654 and the park restaurant from 1956 (with music pavilion) Swiss house , several Apelsteine from the 19th century at the gatehouses Dölitz and Markkleeberg, a temple of the muses and an ant temple , both from the year 1896, as well as several sculptures of muses from the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to the cultural monuments, there is also a technical monument , the Dölitz watermill .

Markkleeberg Eco School
The eco school is a place of instruction in the countryside with an attached building in the agra-Park. Due to the use of ecological energy technologies in the existing school, the school already has a certain character as a technology mediator.
Dölitz watermill
The Dölitz watermill regularly offers courses on the subject of "Water & Energy" as well as environmental education programs.

gastronomy

Park restaurant

The park restaurant in the agra-Park (also called Parkschloss) was reopened in 2006 as a place for larger celebrations. It offers four ballrooms with 25 to 350 people and a large terrace. The agra-Park also has an Italian restaurant and a Spreewald tavern.

agra exhibition center

The agra decreed in the 1970s more than 190 hectares of open spaces and more than 90 pavilions and exhibition halls, of which stand in 2017, three exhibition halls and four usable for measuring open spaces at the agra exhibition grounds. There are also other open spaces that can be used for special purposes. There are 2,500 parking spaces for cars at the agra exhibition center.

Exhibition halls

Three exhibition halls connected by connecting corridors are available on the agra exhibition grounds. These exhibition halls are arranged like a three-pointed star, with a forum (upper floor) and a vestibule (ground floor) in the center of the star. The exhibition halls are entered and exited via the vestibule, the exhibition halls are linked to one another via this vestibule. Hall 1 and Hall 2 are typical exhibition halls with a freely spanned floor area of 5,518 m² (Hall 1) and 4,750 m² (Hall 2). Hall 4, the third exhibition hall, has a three-part structure; this hall allows shows and concerts. Hall 4 has a gross floor area of around 3,000 m². This means that a total of around 13,000 m² of hall space is available for exhibition purposes in the agra exhibition center.

Outdoor area

The open-air area of the agra exhibition center is strongly structured and partly loosened up by trees and bushes up to groups of trees. This gives the outdoor area a very park-like character, which is useful for certain types of exhibitions and events, while other types of events will not be able to cope with it. Large areas of the outdoor area are no longer used for trade fair purposes, but can be used for larger events due to the nature of the park. There are currently four open spaces (named with the letters C, D, E, G) that can be used for trade fair purposes. Open spaces C (approx. 24,000 m²) and G (approx. 6,000 m²) are not broken up and free of trees or bushes. That is around 30,000 m² in total. In addition, there are open areas D (approx. 8,000 m² free area) and E (approx. 5,000 m² free area), which are strongly loosened by trees. That is approx. 13,000 m² of parking space. The open spaces C, D, E and G are all accessible by media (electricity, partly water). A total of around 43,000 m² of open space near the three exhibition halls can be used without further ado. There is also a path along the outer wall of exhibition halls 1 and 2, which is also designated as usable space and is around 300 meters long. history

The origin of today's agra park area between the cities of Leipzig and Markkleeberg goes back to the landscape park Paul Herfurths (1855–1937). In 1889 he acquired the meadows between Städtelner Straße (today Raschwitzer Straße) and Pleiße and built his summer residence there, which remained in private ownership until the family was expropriated in 1945.

Former exhibition hall

In 1948 the first horticultural exhibition of local gardeners took place on the site, which expanded rapidly in the following years. At the instigation of Oskar Baumgarten , the first horticultural exhibition of the GDR opened in Markkleeberg in 1950, from 1952 this and the agricultural exhibition of the GDR - under the name "agra Markkleeberg" - took place regularly here together. This exhibition was a presentation of agriculture in the GDR . In the years that followed, the exhibition grounds were further modified on a large scale. After the horticultural exhibition was relocated to Erfurt in 1960, this part of the exhibition area was transformed into a recreational park, the nucleus of today's agra-Park . In 1990 the area of "agra" comprised approx. 90 hectares on which more than 90 halls and pavilions were located. The exhibition usually attracted over half a million visitors and guests each year, including more than ten thousand visitors from over 100 countries. In 1969 alone 750,000 visitors came.

After the fall of the Wall, the "agra" rapidly lost its importance. After several name changes, it moved to the Leipzig Exhibition Center in 2005. From 1990 to 2000, the exhibition operations on the agra exhibition grounds were transferred to "agra Messepark Betriebsgesellschaft mbH", a subsidiary of the city of Markkleeberg, and various agricultural exhibitions and trade fairs were to follow. From 2001, the areas of the agra Park and the agra exhibition grounds were managed independently of each other. The city administration of Leipzig is striving to renaturate the agra exhibition grounds as far as possible in the future.
