Akram Afif ( Arabic أكرم عفيف, DMG Akram ʿAfīf ), with full name Akram Hassan Afif Yahya Afif (born November 18, 1996 in Doha ), is a Qatari soccer player who has been playing for the first division club al-Sadd SC since January 2018 .

The winger has been a Qatari international since September 2015 and won the Asian Cup with his home country in 2019 .

Club career

Beginnings

Akram Afif, who was born in Doha , began playing football in the youth departments of the local clubs al-Markhiya SC and al-Sadd SC . In 2009, at the age of 12, he moved to the Aspire Academy , which trains the Emirates' greatest sports talents . As an exchange student, from 2012 he played in Spain in the youth department of Sevilla FC and in that of Villarreal FC .

Time at KAS Eupen

In January 2015, Afif, now back as a player in al-Sadd SC, switched to Belgian second division club KAS Eupen on loan for a year and a half . The club from the province of Liège has a cooperation with the Aspire Academy, which acts as a sponsor for the team. He made his debut on January 18, 2015 (22nd matchday) in a 2-1 home win against Eendracht Aalst and scored his first goal in this game. In the 2014/15 season he played seven league games in which he scored two goals.

In the next 2015/16 season, he oscillated between the starting line-up and the reserve bank. At the end of the season he established himself as an undisputed regular player under head coach Jordi Condom . On March 18, 2016 (29th matchday), he scored twice in a 4-0 home win against KSV Roeselare and prepared another goal. This season, with six goals in 16 league games, he contributed significantly to the promotion of KAS Eupen to the top Belgian division .

Change to Spain

On May 8, 2016 it was announced that Afif was returning to Villarreal on a permanent basis, becoming the first Qatari player to be signed by a Spanish first division club . However , he did not make his debut at Submarino Amarillo for the time being, because on August 4 he was loaned to league rivals Sporting Gijón for the entire 2016/17 season. He made his debut on August 21 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 home win against Athletic Bilbao when he came on for Burgui in the 72nd minute . Due to short injuries, he was prevented from breaking into the starting lineup and spent most of the season in the stands. Ultimately, he played nine league games before returning to Villarreal in summer 2017.

Return to Eupen and Qatar

After he couldn't assert himself at Gijón, he had no chance of a place in the squad at Villarreal either. In order to get match practice, he returned to KAS Eupen in Belgium on July 14, 2017. At Eupen he quickly found himself back in the starting line-up and scored a goal in 15 league games by January 2018 and prepared three more goals.

On January 31, the loan deal was ended and Afif immediately loaned to his former employer al-Sadd SC in Qatar. In the league, he immediately became an important part. On the last day of the match he marked a hat trick in a 9-1 home win against al-Kharitiyath SC . In seven league games in the 2017/18 season, he scored three goals and prepared four more goals.

In the following season he rose to the indispensable regular player under head coach Jesualdo Ferreira and became one of the best players in the league. On August 12, 2018 (2nd match day) he scored two goals in a 10-1 home win against al-Arabi SC and prepared five more goals. He tied his first triple pack of the season on matchday 14 in an 8-1 away win against al-Gharafa SC . In the 2018 AFC Champions League , he promoted his team to the semi-finals with important goals. In the league, he played all 22 league games and promoted his team to the championship title with 26 goals and 13 assists. He was the second best scorer behind his team-mate Baghdad Bounedjah (39 goals). In the AFC Champions League 2019 they reached the semi-finals again. Afif returned to Villarreal CF on July 1, 2020. Up to this point - due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the season was not yet over - he had scored 12 goals and prepared eleven goals in 17 league games in the 2019/20 season .

On July 8, 2020, Afif moved permanently to al-Sadd SC, where he signed a five-year contract.

National team

Afif represented his home country in various junior national teams.

He made his debut in the Qatari A-selection on September 3, 2015 in a 15-0 home win against Bhutan in the qualifier for the 2019 Asian Cup . To date, this victory is the highest in the history of the Qatari national team. He scored his first goal on June 6, 2017 in a 2-2 draw in a friendly international match against North Korea .

In January 2019, he took part with Qatar in the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates . In the group stage, he contributed five assists to the three wins.
