Alberto Colombo (racing driver)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alberto Colombo (born February 23, 1946 in Varedo ) is a former Italian racing driver who was particularly active in formula racing .

Career

After overall victory in Italian Formula 3 in 1974, Colombo rose to Formula 2 the next season . His most successful season was 1977 , where he finished third in Mugello and finished eighth overall.

In the current season he left Formula 2 to take up a Formula 1 assignment with the German ATS team , where he replaced the French Jean-Pierre Jarier . At the Belgian Grand Prix in Zolder he did not qualify for the race as 28th of 30 drivers; the same happened at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jarama . Then he was replaced after only two races by the eventual world champion Keke Rosberg . Another opportunity arose for Colombo at the Italian Grand Prix when he drove the second Merzario . However, he was eliminated as 32nd and last in the pre-qualification, while teammate and boss Arturo Merzario qualified for the race with a 1.7 seconds faster lap. This was the only outing of two Merzario racing cars in one weekend in the history of the racing team.

After his short Formula 1 career, Colombo drove two more seasons in the midfield of Formula 2 and achieved two third places before he was the owner and manager of the Sanremo Racing team , for which he had previously driven, until the mid-1980s.
