Alexander Bertino Rodmann

Alexander "Bertino" Rodmann (* 1958 ) is a German (jazz) guitarist, musician, composer and author.

Live and act

Bertino Rodmann was born in Frankfurt am Main . He began to play the guitar autodidactically in 1973, initially with the electric guitar . Acoustic guitar and other instruments such as drums and keyboards as well as vocals followed , also self-taught. From 2000 to 2002 vocal training with Amy Leverenz . He has been teaching intermittently as a guitar teacher in various styles since the early 1980s. Rodmann started playing in bands at an early age. In 1975 he was guitarist in his first formation Loch Ness and then played in numerous other bands. For a short time he also worked as a drummer.

From 1977 to 1979 Rodmann was guitarist and singer in the band Strassenjungs , with whom he recorded the debut album Permanlutscher for CBS Records and toured Europe in the opening act of The Clash, among other things . In 1980 he switched to the German rock band Octopus as a guitarist, with whom he recorded an album and toured a lot. From 1981 to 1985 he was the band leader of the Alex Rodmann Group. There he had first encounters with jazz, gypsy jazz and swing as well as the music of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club de France . After the death of bassist Billy Bilek, the band broke up.

Between 1985 and 1988 Rodmann worked as a DJ in the Sachs-Keller in Frankfurt and as a guitarist in various studio productions. From 1992 to 1996 he completed various internships as a sound engineer and then worked in this profession in the “Listen Up!” Recording studio in Offenbach . During this time he produced an album for the band Area Disaster as a sound engineer .

Around 1998 he founded his own small project studio under the name Soundtemple-Productions , composes, produces and mixes many smaller CD and film productions himself . So Rodmann u. a. 4 CDs under the synonym El Party X ("Songs from Outa Space", "You got me going", "We are going all the way", "Desperate Dreams") in self-distribution.

From 1997 to 1998/99 he undergoes training to multimedia - designer learns ( programming , audio - and video -cut and graphic design ) at the prestigious Academy DTP (Rhein-Main). He then worked independently with his own multimedia company "digitalwelten -new media service-" until he closed the company in 2010.

From 2000 he returned to the acoustic guitar and his love for gypsy jazz . In 2007, 2009 and 2010 she took part in masterclasses and workshops with well-known gypsy jazz guitarists such as Romane Manetti , Stochelo Rosenberg and Angelo DeBarre to learn the style even better.

In 2005 he founded his first own jazz formation “Coeur du Bois” (French for “Heart of Wood”), named after the song Coeur de Bois (French for “Heart of Wood”) by the well-known French guitarist Angelo DeBarre , and has been playing ever since with this in changing line-ups. The style ranges from classic gypsy jazz á la Django Reinhardt to BossaNova / Latin jazz to more modern bebop songs. Well-known musicians of the jazz and gypsy jazz scene play here sporadically again and again, so u. a. John Defferary (clarinet), Jonas Lohse (bass), Matthias Hampel (guitar), Thore Benz (bass), Serge Donkerslot (clarinet), Titi Bamberger (guitar), Dario Napoli (guitar), Christoph König (violin), Robin Nolan (Git.), Lulo Reinhardt (Git.), Mike and Taylor Reinhardt (Git.) And many more.

In 2011 Bertino Rodmann published his first guitar textbook (in German) with the title "Gypsyjazz-Guitar - a Tribute to Gypsy-Jazz" at the renowned Alfred Musik Publishing Verlag in Cologne. In 2013 the English version of the book will follow in international distribution by Alfred Music Publishing . Bertino Rodmann has been giving workshops / lessons for gypsy jazz guitar himself at irregular intervals since 2008.

Since 2010 he has played many concerts alongside internationally known gypsy jazz guitarists such as: Fapy Lafertin , Lulo Reinhardt (German grandnephew of Django Reinhardt ), Jordan Weiss (a cousin of Häns'che Weiss ) or Robin Nolan and is in the gypsy jazz scene as a musician.

In 2013 he founded the “Lulo Reinhardt & Bertino Rodmann Quartet” together with Lulo Reinhardt and has played various appearances with it since then. Jazz, Latin jazz and swing with original compositions by both guitarists are on the program. The collaboration continues.

In 2016 he took part in the international music project "bridges - music connects", which brings refugee musicians together with German musicians and thus opens up a completely new musical initiative and new ways of communication . Big performance with orchestra in the broadcasting hall of the Hessischer Rundfunk on April 19, 2016.

In 2019 the new formation "Swing Heaven" will be founded together with other musicians, which will perform with their own arrangements and covers, songs from the 1930s to 1960s by Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday and their own compositions based on the motto Gypsy-Jazz meets Blues .
