Alexander Schubert (born July 28, 1969 in Bayreuth ) is a German historian and cultural manager . He has been director of the Palatinate History Museum in Speyer since 2014 .

Life

From 1992 to 2001 Schubert studied history , German , political science and education in Bayreuth and Bamberg . With a scholarship from the Hanns Seidel Foundation , he received his doctorate from Bernd Schneidmüller in 2001 on the subject of the First South German Urban War . From 2002 to 2004 he was responsible for public relations at the museums of the city of Bamberg .

In 2004 he moved to the Kulturhistorisches Museum Magdeburg to prepare for the exhibition of the Council of Europe and the Saxony-Anhalt State Exhibition of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation , for which he conceptually supervised the late medieval departments as well as the area of public relations and marketing . In 2005/06 he also took on the teaching assignment for cultural history exhibitions as a professional field at the Institute of Art History at the Free University of Berlin together with Gabriele Köster.

In 2007, Schubert moved to the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums in Mannheim , initially as a personal advisor to Managing Director Alfried Wieczorek and responsible for public relations for the exhibition projects Alexander the Great and the Opening of the World (2009) and Die Staufer and Italy . Three regions of innovation in Medieval Europe (2010). In 2008 he also took over the management of the marketing department of the Reiss Engelhorn museums. Since 2009 he has been head of the entire press and public relations / marketing department. Schubert coordinated the 2010 Staufer Year for Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. From 2011 he was Scientific Director and responsible for the areas of major scientific projects, press and public relations, and marketing. He was also the managing director of Museums-Service GmbH. As a project manager he prepared the exhibition Die Wittelsbacher am Rhein. The Electoral Palatinate and Europe for 2013. Since 2013, Schubert has held a teaching position for cultural marketing at the Kufstein University of Applied Sciences .

On July 1, 2014, Alexander Schubert became director of the Historisches Museum der Pfalz Speyer .

Since 2018 he has been teaching cultural mediation at the Department of History at Heidelberg University.

Bodies

Schubert is chairman of the specialist commission of the Museums-PASS-Musées , which represents 320 museums in Germany, France and Switzerland, first spokesman for the network of museums and castles in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region and a member of the board of the Rhineland-Palatinate Museums Association.

He is a board member of the European Foundation Speyer Cathedral , the Kurt Beck projects and advisory board member of the national exhibition The Emperor and the pillars of their power in the Landesmuseum Mainz , the Prussia Museum Minden and the Center for Medieval exhibitions in Magdeburg.

Schubert's academic focus includes topics from the medieval constitution, city, empire and mentality history . A special focus of his research is the history of the city of Nuremberg . He gives lectures in Germany and the USA on questions of cultural policy, in particular on the cultural-political significance of major historical exhibitions. He is one of the initiators of the Germany-wide tourism project Destination Culture . For the communication concept developed by Schubert for the exhibition Die Staufer and Italy , the Reiss Engelhorn museums were awarded the marketing prize of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region in November 2011, chaired by Peter Wippermann . As a history expert, Schubert appears in programs on SWR television such as SonntagAbend and Planet Wissen . On September 28, 2013, Alexander Schubert was one of the people of the week in Frank Elstner 's SWR program of the same name .
