Amphoe Kantharalak (in Thai อำเภอ กันทรลักษ์ ) is a district ( Amphoe - administrative district) in the southeast of the province of Si Sa Ket . The province of Si Sa Ket is located in the northeast region of Thailand , the so-called Isan .

etymology

Kanthara ( กันทร ) means “big cliff”, “cave” or “valley”, lak ( ลัก ษ์ ) means “(auspicious) sign”.

geography

Amphoe Kantharalak borders the following districts (clockwise from west): Amphoe Khun Han , Si Rattana and Benchalak in the province of Si Sa Ket, as well as the Amphoe Thung Si Udom and Nam Khun in the province of Ubon Ratchathani . To the south are the provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey of Cambodia .

The headquarters of the Khao Phra Wihan National Park is in this district. The main attraction of the park - the ruins of the Khmer temple Prasat Preah Vihear - is located on the Cambodian side of the border, according to the ruling of the International Court of Justice.

history

The old name of Kantharalak was Mueang Uthumphon Phisai, which was subordinate to Mueang Khukhan, as the central administration was in Ban Kan Tuat in the Tambon Uthumphon Phisai. The current administration building is in Tambon Nam Om.

In 1939, the Nam Om District was renamed Kantharalak.

There is one commune with "city" status ( Thesaban Mueang ) in the district:

  • Kantharalak (Thai: เทศบาล เมือง กันทรลักษ์ ), consisting of parts of the Tambon Nam Om and Nong Ya Lat.

There are two municipalities with "small town" status ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district:

  • Nong Ya Lat (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล หนอง หญ้า ลาด ), consisting of the remaining parts of the Tambon Nong Ya Lat.
  • Suan Kluai (Thai: เทศบาล ตำบล สวน กล้วย ), consisting of the entire tambon Suan Kluai.
