history

The Frankenberg City Court had existed since the Middle Ages. It was Oberhof of the courts of the Frankenberg office . During the French period (1806 to 1813) Frankenberg was the seat of a canton in the Werra Department in the Kingdom of Westphalia . There was a peace court for the canton with its seat in Frankenberg.

With an edict of June 29, 1821, administration and justice were separated in Kurhessen . Now judicial offices were responsible for the first instance jurisdiction and the Frankenberg judicial office was set up.

In 1831 the judicial office was divided. 13 municipalities were assigned to the newly created Justice Office Frankenau . This also took its seat in the monastery building. By ordinance of May 12, 1852, the Frankenau Justice Office was dissolved and reassigned to the Frankenberg Justice Office.

After the German War , Kurhessen was annexed by Prussia . The judicial office was continued as the royal Prussian district court Frankenberg from 1867.

In 1947 the Battenberg District Court lost its independence and became a branch of the Frankenberg District Court. On July 1, 1970, this branch was also closed and jurisdiction was carried out in the Frankenberg District Court.

building

St. Georgenberg Monastery, seat of the court until 1903

Since 1567 the building of the abolished St. Georgenberg Monastery was used for the local authorities. Therefore, the Justice Office Frankenberg from 1821 to 1867 and the District Court from 1867 to 1903 had their seat in the former monastery. The Frankenau Justice Office also used the monastery as an official residence from 1831 to 1852.

The current district court building was built between 1901 and 1903. In order to ensure that the district court would be built in the city center, the costs for the required property were collected in a collection campaign by the citizens of the city and the property in Geismarer Strasse was donated to the state. The justice administration built the new district court and judicial prison on this property.

The space in the courthouse was insufficient, particularly after the Battenberg District Court was repealed. In 1980, the district court building, which had been vacant for a long time, was converted into an extension. In 2004 the district court received an additional extension. After its inauguration, the branch in Gemünden was also closed and integrated into Frankenberg.
