Andreas Herberg-Rothe (* 1954 ) is a German historian and political scientist . He is considered an internationally recognized Clausewitz researcher.

Life

Herberg-Rothe studied modern history from 1975 to 1981 with a focus on military history with Werner Hahlweg at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, as well as sociology and political science in Münster and Frankfurt. After completing his master's degree in 1981, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Münster with the support of the German Society for Peace and Conflict Research (DGFK). In 1989 he started studying political science at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main with the dissertation “ Outlines of the Absolute Movement”. Critique of Mechanical Materialism to the Dr. phil. ( magna cum laude ) doctorate. He then taught at the University of Frankfurt am Main and did extensive research on Carl von Clausewitz .

From 1998 to 2008 he worked at the Humboldt University of Berlin and the Philipps University of Marburg . In 2000 he completed his habilitation in political science at the Institute for Social Sciences with the thesis Das Rätsel Clausewitz. Political theory of war in conflict at the HU Berlin. The reviewers were Herfried Münkler (Berlin), Peter Paret (Princeton) and Wilfried von Bredow (Marburg). From 2001 to 2009 he was a private lecturer in political science in the political theory department. In 2002/03 he received a grant from the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF). In 2004/05 he was Associate of the Oxford Leverhulme Program "The Changing Character of War" at the University of Oxford . From 2005 to 2006 he was a visiting fellow at the Center for International Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In 2006 he worked as a peer reviewer for Oxford University Press .

In 2009 he completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt am Main. He became a lecturer at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences , where he is currently teaching special tasks in the Faculty of Social and Cultural Studies.

His main research interests are political theory , war theory and peace research . Herberg-Rothe is u. a. Member of the working group theory of the working group for peace and conflict research . Guest lectures led him a. a. to Hamburg (as part of the "Clausewitz Conversation" at the International Clausewitz Center), West Point , Washington DC, Istanbul (as part of the "International Hegel Conference"), Singapore and Tokyo. In 2005 he organized the conference “Clausewitz in the 21st century” with Hew Strachan , the Chichele Professor of the History of War , at the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford .

Herberg-Rothe has published several monographs, book chapters and articles in (scientific) journals and yearbooks such as Vorfalls , Der Staat , RUSI Journal , Österreichische Militärische Zeitschrift , Journal of Strategic Studies , European Security , Theoria , International Journal of Conflict and Violence , Jahrbuch Politisches Thinking and Hegel yearbook as well as in the culture magazine Merkur , on the blog World Security Network , in the Bundeswehr magazine if - magazine for inner guidance and in the newsletter of the working group military history . He also published as a guest author in the Frankfurter Rundschau and in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . In addition, he has occasionally appeared as a reviewer.
