Career

Schlütter joined in 1795 as a commissioned officer in the 7th Infantry - Regiment of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg one. When the army was dissolved by the Artlenburg Convention in 1803, he went to England and in 1804 was employed as an ensign in the 1st Line Battalion of the Royal German Legion . In 1805 he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1811 to captain ( captain ). With the Royal German Legion, Schlütter took part in the expedition to Hanover under Lord Cathcart in 1805 , in the siege of Copenhagen in 1807 and in the campaign in Spain and Portugal from 1808 to 1812 . In this campaign he was slightly wounded in the battle of Talavera and continued to fight in the battles of Ciudad Rodrigo , Buçaco , Fuentes de Oñoro and Salamanca . In 1814 Schlütter served on General Carl von Alten's staff in northern Germany and the Netherlands and in 1815 took part in the Battle of Waterloo . At times he was also assigned to the staff of General Lyon . In 1815 Schlütter was promoted to major in the Stade Landwehr Battalion and later transferred to the 6th Infantry Regiment. In 1826 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . In 1831 Schlütter was appointed senior adjutant to Duke Adolph Friedrich von Cambridge , who at that time ruled the Kingdom of Hanover as viceroy .

In 1833 he resigned from active military service and on November 22, 1833 was appointed captain of the Elbe customs guard, the brig piercer of the Elbe customs station in Brunshausen near Stade. The swearing-in took place on January 27, 1834 by the Ober-Zoll-Direktion Hannover , after which he started his service. In 1835 he was given leave of absence for two weeks to accompany the Duke of Cambridge on a trip to Mecklenburg. In 1839 he was given the character of a colonel . In 1841 Schlütter then accompanied the Duke of Cambridge to London . In 1846, on the day of his 50th anniversary in service, Schlütter was given the character of major general. He was also honored as the commander of the Guelph Order, 1st class.

Already during his service the limited control possibilities of a slow customs sailing ship compared to the ever faster steamers became obvious. In addition, the piercer had to be put into winter quarters in the winter months because of the ice drift on the Elbe . Because of these limited uses, it was decided in 1849 to pull in the customs guard ship. Schlütter then announced his resignation on October 20, 1850 and retired. He died in Stade in 1863.
