Ankeny is a city (with the status " City ") in Polk County in the center of the US -amerikanischen state of Iowa . In 2010 the city had 45,582 inhabitants.

Ankeny is part of the metropolitan area around Iowa's capital Des Moines .

Ankeny is located in the northern suburbs of Des Moines not far from the west bank of the Des Moines River dammed up to Saylorville Lake . The city is located at 41 ° 43'47 "north latitude and 93 ° 36'21" west longitude and extends over 75 km².

Neighboring towns are Des Moines (17.8 km south to the city center), Polk City (14.5 km northwest), Elkhart (11.3 km northeast), Bondurant (14.9 km southeast), Berwick (10.2 km south-southeast ) and Saylorville (10.1 km southwest).

history

Ankeny was founded as a rural community in 1875 by John Fletcher Ankeny , a Des Moines businessman. In 1903 Ankeny was given City Status . In 1940 the US government had an ammunition factory built, which today serves as the manufacturing facility for the John Deere agricultural machinery company .
