history
Ankeny was founded as a rural community in 1875 by John Fletcher Ankeny , a Des Moines businessman. In 1903 Ankeny was given City Status . In 1940 the US government had an ammunition factory built, which today serves as the manufacturing facility for the John Deere agricultural machinery company .
