Career

In 2004, Chakvetadze, who became a professional player in 2003, made her Grand Slam debut with a victory over the then number 3 in the world, Anastassija Myskina , in the third round of the US Open . In the same year it was among the top 100 in the world for the first time .

In 2005 she reached the third round of the French Open and again the third round of the US Open, making a jump into the top 50 in the world rankings. At the end of the year she was 33rd.

In 2006, Chakvetadze won the Tier I event in Moscow . On the way to the title, she defeated three top ten players: Dinara Safina , Jelena Dementjewa and Nadja Petrowa . She also won the Guangzhou tournament and reached the last sixteen at the US Open. At the end of the year she was ranked 13th in the world.

In 2007 she won the WTA tournaments in Hobart and 's-Hertogenbosch. She also reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and the French Open. In late July, Chakvetadze won the Stanford tournament. In August she made it to the semi-finals in San Diego, but lost there to Maria Sharapova in two sets. At the US Open she reached the first Grand Slam semifinals of her career. There she was defeated by her compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 6: 3, 1: 6 and 1: 6. On September 10, 2007, Chakvetadze was number 5 in the world rankings, her personal career record. With their victory over Francesca Schiavone (6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4) Russia beat defending champions Italy and won the Fed Cup .

At the Porsche Cup in Stuttgart, Tschakwetadze lost her first game against Tatiana Golovin 6-7, 1-6 . At the Kremlin Cup in Moscow she also suffered a first round defeat as defending champion against Dinara Safina (6-7 and 2-6). At the Masters of the eight best players of the 2007 season in Madrid, she reached the semifinals with victories over Jelena Janković and Serena Williams , but had to bow to her compatriot Sharapova again. Chakvetadze ended 2007 as number 6 in the world.

The start of the 2008 season was rather modest. A first round defeat in Sydney against Katarina Srebotnik from Slovenia was followed by a defeat in the third round of the Australian Open against Marija Kirilenko (7: 6, 1: 6, 2: 6). In February she was able to celebrate her seventh tournament victory in the final in Paris against Ágnes Szávay . Also in New Haven, she moved into the final, where she had to admit defeat to Caroline Wozniacki . By then, she had won all of her WTA finals.

In 2009 and 2010 she was able to stay in the top 100. From mid-July to the end of August 2010 she won 15 of her 16 games and also achieved her last two tournament victories in Portorož and Bronx . Only the semi-final match against world number one Wozniacki at the tournament in Copenhagen was lost. In 2011, she canceled several tournaments due to illness and, according to the WTA, most recently several due to dizziness.

In January 2012 she reached the quarterfinals at the WTA tournament in Hobart , which she won in 2007, but had to give up her match against Shahar Peer at the beginning of the third set. She played her last WTA tournament in Tashkent in September 2012 , where she reached the round of 16 in singles and the finals in doubles.

In September 2013, she announced her retirement due to a stubborn back injury.
