The Aschaffenburg Maulaff is a slightly smaller than life-size figure made of oak that is popular in Aschaffenburg .

history

The figure was carved by the sculptors Hoffmann and Baumgärtner in 1778. The Maulaff caricatures a farmer in the Spessart costume of the late 18th century: a ship's hat, green skirt, red vest, short yellow leather pants, calf stockings and buckled shoes. He rests his hands on a long stick and opens his mouth wide. The Maulaff was used for amusement by the Electoral Court Society in Schönbusch Park near Aschaffenburg. As the target figure he was standing on a meadow in the " Valley of the Games ". The gentlemen tried to throw a kind of billiard ball into the wide open mouth, which then - if hit - rolled out through a tube at the bottom of the back of the figure.

When the Schönbusch became Bavarian and the electoral remnant was auctioned off, the figure was acquired by the owner of the Nilkheim court , Carl Constantin Victor Freiherr von Mergenbaum . Von Mergenbaum's office and study was on the ground floor on Großostheimer Strasse. The baron often felt bothered by passers-by shoving in and finally brought his mole monkey into position right next to the window on the desk and thus scared away many curious people. During this time the figure was called "Nilkheimer Maulaff".

Some time after Mergenbaum's death (September 8, 1845), the Maulaff was auctioned by Klement Kitz, a master tanner from the Aschaffenburg Löhergraben, who set it up in his small park in front of the Sand Gate. Here the Maulaff caused a sensation and was dragged from Ulk to the then walled city. Then he stood for many years on Frau Kitz's vineyard in Löhergraben. Its next owner, the Aschaffenburg-born Higher Regional Judge Son, gave the figure to the museum in his hometown before the First World War , where it has been for sale as gaffers ever since . Today the Maulaff is one of the city's landmarks and is exhibited in the Aschaffenburg Castle Museum.

Adaptations

  • In 1952, the Aschaffenburg came almost eight Günter Kolb (1924-1991) for the first time as "Ascheberger Maulaff" at meetings of the carnival clubs Concordia. He too opened his mouth wide and drew attention to Aschaffenburg politicians and their surroundings.
  • In 1955 a replica of the "Maulaff" carved out of shell limestone was set up in the playground of the then newly built Grünewald elementary school.
  • The motif can be found on numerous other depictions to this day, for example the “Mauläffchen” appears in the Museum Education Service of the city of Aschaffenburg.
  • A restaurant in the old town bears the name Maulaff and a raft owned by the landlord “Mainfloß” was also christened with this name.

Maulaffenfest

The Aschaffenburg Maulaffenfest has also established itself at the Aschaffenburg City Festival every year on the last weekend in August, organized since 2004 by the Hofgarten Cabaret with well-known cabaret artists and comedians .
