The Azerbaijan Manat ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Manatı) or Manat for short is the currency of Azerbaijan .
1 manat is divided into 100 Qəpik (according to the old transcription from the Cyrillic Gepik ). The currency was introduced in 1992 and initially existed parallel to the ruble, which was taken over from the Soviet era . At the beginning of 1994 the manat became the sole national currency. The local abbreviation for the manat is also AM
Due to the increased inflation, the old manat (ISO code AZM) was replaced by the new manat (ISO code AZN, 1 new manat = 5000 old manat) on January 1, 2006. The new banknotes and coins were designed by Robert Kalina , the designer of the euro banknotes . The new symbol for the manat, " ", a symbolic M , resembles a euro symbol tilted 90 degrees to the right . It was included in the Unicode standard at position U + 20BC (₼) in June 2014 .
Banknotes for the old manat were available in the following denominations: 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 10,000, 50,000 manat. There were coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 Qəpik .
For the new manat there are coins of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 Qəpik, the latter being a bimetal coin similar to the 2 euro coin, as well as banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 Manat.
A new 200 manat note was put into circulation in May 2018. This is printed by Giesecke and Devrient in Germany.
