Asha Bhosle (born Asha Mangeshkar ; Marathi : आशा भोसले, Āśā Bhosle ; born September 8, 1933 in Satara , Maharashtra ) is an Indian singer . She sings Ghazals , Bhajans and songs by Rabindranath Thakurs and Kazi Nazrul Islam and is particularly known for her film songs. Together with her older sister Lata Mangeshkar she dominated the female playback singing of Indian films for more than three decades and so far has recorded songs for more than 1000 films in many Indian languages.

life and career

She grew up in Kolhapur and together with her sister Lata received classical singing lessons from father Dinanath Mangeshkar , a theater actor and singer. Her two younger siblings Usha and Hridaynath also became singers and composers and singers, respectively.

Asha made her film debut in 1948 with recordings for Ravindra Daves Chunaria , and she sang her first solo piece in Raat Ki Rani (1949) by Jagdish Sethi . Initially she was in the second row of Indian film music singers behind Geeta Dutt , Shamshad Begum and their sister Lata, but North American jazz music , which is considered modern , had a strong influence on Indian film music composers and also on the style of singing in the 1950s. Asha Bhosle proved to be a talented interpreter of this music and developed into one of the most important representatives of her branch. One of the best-known pieces of this style interpreted by Asha Bhosle is Ina Mina Dika by composer C. Ramchandra from the film Aasha (1957) by MV Raman . In the same year she also had success with Omkar Prasad Nayyar's plays for the film Naya Daur . Until the early 1970s she was Nayyar's main singer; but she also often worked with the composers Khayyam and Ravi .

Bhosle's duet partners were mostly Mohammed Rafi or Kishore Kumar . She sang with Kumar, especially in the 70s and 80s, to electronically influenced pop and disco music by Rahul Dev Burman , with whom she was married for a second time from 1980 until his death in 1994. Work with Burman began in 1966 while shooting the film Teesri Manzil .

With Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijazaat (1987) she sang songs by Khayyam and received national film awards. Unlike her sister Lata, Bhosle remained active in the 1990s. During this decade she sang for Rangeela (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Taal (1999), among others . She recorded songs by Ilaiyaraajas and AR Rahmans , including for Lagaan (2001). In the Tamil film she recently sang in Chandramukhi (2005). Until 2007 she occasionally performed live.

Awards

Asha Bhosle has received numerous film awards. She was honored seven times with a Filmfare Award for best playback singer , in 1982 and 1988 she received National Film Awards , 2001 the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and in 2008 she was awarded the second highest Indian civil order Padma Vibhushan .

Collaboration with other musicians

She sang for the song Bow Down Mister by British singer Boy George in the early 1990s . Together with the Kronos Quartet she recorded an album with songs by Rahul Dev Burman in 2005. Tabla player Zakir Hussain and pipa player Wu Man were also involved in the recordings .

In 1995 Asha Bhosle recorded North Indian classical music in California with sarod player Ali Akbar Khan . On the album Legacy 11 she sang compositions in the style of Seni Gharana , the musical tradition cultivated by Ali Akbar Khan, and a homage to the master as a formal requirement for learning these pieces of music. In a special ceremony (gandabandan) she proclaimed him her teacher. The two had worked together once before in 1952. For the film Aandhivan , Ali Akbar Khan was the composer and conductor of the film music sung by Asha Bhosle and her sister.
