August Ernst von Kamptz (born September 3, 1757 in Klein-Varchow , † June 24, 1817 in Karlsbad ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the Cosel Fortress .

Life

His parents were Joachim Ernst von Kamptz (1717–1780) and his wife Sabine Helene Luise, born von Kamptz (1719–1766) from the Drakow family. The father was the master of Deven and Varchow .

Military career

From July 1, 1770, Kamptz visited the cadet house in Berlin . On March 28, 1774 he came as a private corporal in the infantry regiment "von Kleist" and on November 16, 1774 became an ensign . During the Bavarian War of Succession in 1778/79 he took part in the battle near Jung-Buchau. After the war, Kamptz was promoted to second lieutenant on December 5, 1781 and served as adjutant general to his regiment chief Raumer from May 26, 1790 . During the Second Partition of Poland , the Raumer Corps was to occupy Danzig and Weichselmünde . This was already prepared with the local authorities; nevertheless there was resistance. But Kamptz managed to take the cities. He was also able to distinguish himself in the battle at Neugärtner Tor. General Raumer sent him to the King in Berlin with the report of success. On April 12, 1793, he was promoted to captain of the army. With Raumer's appointment as governor of Danzig, Kamptz became an adjutant of the governorate. On September 13, 1797 he came as a company commander in the infantry regiment "de Courbière" . There he was promoted to major on July 6, 1802 and appointed battalion commander on March 2, 1803.

During the Fourth Coalition War , Kamptz fought in the defense of Danzig and suffered a head injury from a sword blow. On May 4, 1807 he was awarded the order Pour le Mérite . On January 22, 1808, he was transferred as commander to the 2nd West Prussian Infantry Regiment and on October 4, 1808, he took over the 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment in the same capacity . This was followed by a use in Kolberg from March 14, 1810 . Here Kamptz was entrusted with the management of the business as the commander. He remained assigned to the 1st West Prussian Infantry Regiment, retired on June 9, 1810. On October 1, 1810, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and on December 4, 1811, he was appointed second in command of Kolberg. Kamptz held the same post from February 15, 1812 in Cosel. The following year he was promoted to colonel on June 4 and on November 22, 1813 he was appointed 1st Commander of Cosel. With a patent dated June 3, 1815, he was promoted to major general on May 31, 1815. Kamptz fell ill from the consequences of his head injury in 1816 and was given leave on March 2, 1817 to relax in Karlsbad . He died there on June 24, 1817.

Kamptz married on July 1, 1788 in Brandenburg on the Havel Charlotte Agnes Friederike Brandt von Lindau (1763-1832) from the Schmerwitz family. She was divorced from Ferdinand Johann Ernst Adolf von Rohr (1752-1819). The marriage with Kamptz was divorced on June 22, 1797. In 1798 she married the then captain and later General Karl Ludwig von Wuthenau (1767-1821). She already had two sons: Ferdinand Karl died in 1806, the second Ferdinand became General of the Infantry and Prussian Minister of War.

After the divorce from his first wife, he married on September 16, 1798 in Bartenstein Caroline Juliane de l'Homme de Courbiere (1776-1843), youngest daughter of Field Marshal Wilhelm René de l'Homme de Courbière . The couple had several children including:
