Karl August Wilhelm von Sommerfeld (born September 4, 1783 in Spandau , † June 12, 1857 in Neufahrwasser ) was a Prussian major general and lord of Niederharpersdorf.

Life

origin

The Sommerfeld family comes from Transylvania and came to Silesia and the Mark Brandenburg in the 17th century . General Andreas von Sommerfeld was already fighting under the Great Elector .

August was the son of the Prussian major Karl Bernhard von Sommerfeld (1739-1817) and his wife Maria Luise Dorothea, née von Pirch (1752-1797). His father had been awarded the order Pour le Mérite during the First Coalition War for his behavior in the battle at Bitch . The sister Auguste (1792-1875) was married to Major General Konrad von Zedlitz and Neukirch .

Military career

Sommerfeld attended the Berlin cadet school and entered on October 31, 1707 Corporal Corporal in the Infantry Regiment "Alt-Larisch" the Prussian army one. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant by the end of January 1802 and was wounded in the Battle of Jena during the Fourth Coalition War . While retreating, Sommerfeld came to Lübeck , where he became a French prisoner of war with the surrender of Ratekau .

In 1808 he returned from captivity and took early May 1810 his farewell from military service. With the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , Sommerfeld was employed on June 1, 1813 as a major and battalion commander in the 15th Silesian Landwehr Infantry Regiment. For the battle near Löwenberg he was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. He fought at the Katzbach and was wounded at the crossing near Wartenburg . Sommerfeld was also in the battles at Bunzlau, Chalons, Montmirail , Chateau-Thierry , Laon , Paris and Fère-Champenoise .

After the war, from May 18, 1816 to April 2, 1820, Sommerfeld was in command of the 4th Opole Landwehr Regiment. Then he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in command of the 22nd Landwehr Regiment. In the same capacity he was active from November 29, 1821 to February 11, 1827 in the 18th Landwehr Regiment. Under aggregation he was then commissioned to lead the 3rd Infantry Regiment and on March 30, 1827 he was promoted to colonel . This was followed from March 30, 1829 to July 19, 1834 as commander of the 6th Infantry Regiment . On July 20, 1834, Sommerfeld was appointed Second Commandant of Danzig and in this position was awarded the Order of St. Anne II. Class in mid-February 1836 . After he had received the character of Major General at the end of March 1836 , Sommerfeld received the Order of the Red Eagle III in January 1837 . Class with a bow and was appointed commander of the 2nd Landwehr Brigade in Danzig on March 30, 1837. The appointment was accompanied by the award of the patent to his rank. On 24 March 1841 Sommerfeld was with an annual pension of 2250 thalers for disposition made. He died on June 12, 1857 in Neufahrwasser.

Sommerfeld married on July 10, 1810 in Niederharpersdorf Friederike Elenore Henriette Freiin von Zedlitz and Neukirch (1790–1863), a sister of Major General Konrad von Zedlitz and Neukirch . The couple had several children:
