The Schomberg is 647.6  m above sea level. NHN it is the second highest mountain in the Lennegebirge after the Homert . It is located in the Sauerland near the Sundern district of Wildewiese in the North Rhine-Westphalian Hochsauerlandkreis .

On the mountain there is a small ski area and the Schomberg tower .

The Schomberg rises in the south of the urban area of ​​Sundern in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park . Its summit is 10 km south of the city center and 600 m east of the Wildewiese district ( 575  m ). About 150 m east and 220 m south of the summit, the border to the Olpe district with the Finnentrop municipality runs along the edge of the forest . Towards the village of Glinge ( 265  m ), 2.4 km southwest in the valley of the Glingebach , the landscape slopes steeply, and beyond that lies Rönkhausen ( 235  m ) in the Lenne valley ; both places belong to Finnentrop.

The Sorpe rises on the north-west slope of the Schomberg , and the Glingebach dam ( 305.2  m ) is 1.9 km south-south-west of the mountain peak . The neighboring elevation to the west is Am Knapp ( 561.1  m ), 1.3 km away .

Natural allocation

The Schomberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33), in the main unit Südsauerländer Bergland (336 2 ) and in the subunit Homert rücken (336 2 .2) to the natural area Wildewiese-Homert (336 2 .21). To the south the landscape falls into the subunit Rönkhauser Lennetal (336 2 .1).

Nature and protected areas

The summit region of the Schomberg and its western slopes are unforested. On its southern slope and on the slopes of the Buchberg and Steinkopf mountain spurs there is the Buchberg / Steinkopf nature reserve ( CDDA no. 389684; designated in 1956; 40.97  hectares in size). Parts of the landscape protection areas Sundern (CDDA no. 555561435; 1993; 146.9283;  km² ) and the district of Olpe (CDDA no. 555555098; ​​1984; 265.0307 km²) extend to the summit region ; The LSG Wildewiese is located on the western slope (CDDA no. 555561628; 1993; 40.14 ha).

Ski area and hiking

On the Schomberg and Am Knapp there is a small ski area with five ski lifts and several ski slopes from 100 to 1200 m in length as well as several groomed trails . The Wilde-Wiese circular hiking trail and the long-distance hiking trails Sauerland-Höhenflug , Möhne-Westerwald-Weg and Residenzenweg lead around the mountain or over it . The summit can be reached on foot or by mountain bike . There is a large car park in Wildewiese.

Schombergturm

The Schombergturm ( ) stands about 175 m south-southwest of the mountain summit . It was built in 2005/2006 as a 60 m high, free-standing steel lattice tower. It is a cell phone tower with a viewing platform at a height of 30 m. This is not towered over by any mountain within a radius of 16 km. The panoramic view covers almost the entire Sauerland. On a clear day, the view extends far into the Münsterland and the Teutoburg Forest as well as to individual peaks of the Siebengebirge .
