Emergence

James Cameron announced in June 2006 that he would like to bring Avatar out as a trilogy if the first part should be successful. After the great success of the film, Cameron announced in December 2009 that an Avatar trilogy would be created. After the sequel was originally scheduled to hit theaters in 2015 and FOX announced the theatrical release for 2016 in April 2014, Cameron announced in January 2015 that the release of the sequel would be postponed until the end of 2017. After it was announced that the series would be expanded to a tetralogy , it was announced that all three sequels would be produced together, as the story was closed between all films, according to Cameron. The film series was later expanded to include another film, making it a pentalogy.

Cast and filming

In August 2017 it was announced that Stephen Lang will again take on the role of the main villain in this and all other planned sequels.

The shooting should begin after the beginning of 2017 and take place from April 2017 in New Zealand and also in Los Angeles and on the MBS Media Campus in Manhattan Beach. It was later announced that filming would not start until the fall of 2017. Filming finally began on September 25, 2017 in Manhattan Beach , California. It became known that in addition to the main characters Saldana and Worthington, a group of children will also be the focus of the plot. Further filming took place in Los Angeles and New Zealand. On November 14, 2018, Cameron announced that filming had been completed with the main cast of the film.

On October 3, 2017, it was announced that Kate Winslet had been signed for a role in the film. This is the first time Cameron and Winslet have worked together on a project since they filmed Titanic 20 years ago .

In addition to three offspring of Jake and Neytiri, descendants of a Na'vi clan have also been revealed, which will play an important role in the sequels. It is about a tribe that lives on a coral reef in the ocean under the rule of Tonowari ( Cliff Curtis ). The children will play a special role in the sequels, as producer Jon Landau told Entertainment Weekly .

publication

After numerous postponements, most recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the US cinema release is scheduled for December 16, 2022. Avatar 3 , 4 and 5 should follow every two years in the following years.
