Avon Park is a city in Highlands County in the US state of Florida with 8,836 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Avon Park is about 10 km north of Sebring and about 110 km southeast and south of Tampa and Orlando .
history
In 1912 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a railway line from Haines City via Avon Park to Sebring . In April 1924 the subsidiary Florida, Western and Northern Railroad of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad was founded, which was to build a railway line from Coleman via Avon Park and Sebring to West Palm Beach . The entire corridor was opened in January 1925.

There are 27 different churches with 14 different denominations in Avon Park, of which the Baptist congregation is the most strongly represented with 8 churches. There are 2 churches that do not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

The population density was 736.3 inh / km². 55.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 28.1% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 0.8% as Asian Americans . 11.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 4.3% to several ethnic groups. 29.2% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 35.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 33.2% of all households. 66.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.65 people and the average family size was 3.16 people.
29.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 48.2% of the population were male and 51.8% were female.
The median annual income was $ 28,189, with 28.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 78.92% of the population, 19.0% spoke Spanish and 2.08% spoke Haitian .

The crime rate in 2010 was 341 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were two rapes, 15 robberies, 39 assaults, 85 break-ins, 243 thefts, nine car thefts and three arson attacks.
