BMW Motorrad Motorsport Endurance is a BMW Motorrad racing team . As part of the FIM Endurance World Championship and other well-known racing events, the team mainly competes in endurance road racing on a modified BMW HP2 Sport . The team's first outing was the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2007, 50 years after the last official factory outing ( Walter Zeller , 1957) of a BMW in road racing.

structure

While the coordination of the race track operations and the development of the machine is taken over by BMW-Motorrad in Munich , the assembly and conversion of the machines as well as the provision of the pit crew during the races are carried out by the company WITEC Motorsport, Adlkofen . WITEC has already looked after the factory-supported guest drivers in the BMW BoxerCup in the past .

landing gear

In contrast to the series machine, the endurance machine has a quick-change system on the front and rear wheels. On the front wheel, after removing the axle, the lower clamps, including the brake caliper, snap outwards in order to accelerate the removal of the front wheel during the pit stop . A titanium central nut from Formula 1 is used to fix the wheel on the rear axle . In addition, higher-quality components from Öhlins are used on the front and rear suspension .

engine

The engine contains the series components of the HP2 Sport , but some components were mechanically processed by (boxer) engine specialist Helmut Mader, Erding , and the engine control in the test department in Munich was adapted accordingly. The changes include weight reduction and adaptation, surface processing to reduce the notch effect and fine processing of the components that influence the gas exchange . For the 2008 season, the intake valves were also enlarged, the fuel pressure increased and the engine management adjusted.

Tank / fairing

According to the regulations, the tank is made of aluminum and filled with so-called tank foam in order to reduce excessive sloshing of the fuel and thus disruptions in the fuel supply. It is also equipped with a Stäubli quick tank cap. The shape of the trim parts largely corresponds to the series parts, but there are front masks without headlights and front masks with two round DE headlights instead of the standard open-area headlights. According to the regulations, the engine spoiler is designed as a liquid-collecting, closed tub and shortened in the area of the rear wheel to make it easier to change the rear wheel. Similarly, the front fender is significantly shortened in the front area compared to the standard part. Instead of the license plate boom, which, attached to the self-supporting rear, encloses the Akrapović underseat silencer from below, the racing machine has a similar boom to which, in accordance with the regulations, two round, red LED lamps are attached.

Electronics / electrics

The wiring harness and the on-board electrics with CAN-BUS technology have been simplified in accordance with the changed requirements. The ABS control unit and unneeded approval-specific components (indicators, horn, side support switch, etc.) were no longer required. Deviating from the standard machine the racing machine is data logger systems of 2D and tracking features. This makes it possible to see the current position of the machine on the route and thus, for example, to have an unscheduled pit stop displayed in good time. The data recording, on the other hand, can only be read out in the pits, as sending from the vehicle is not permitted during the race.

Other technical modifications

In general, all lines connecting various components are provided with Stäubli quick-release couplings. These are used multiple times on the brake system and the fuel system, for example. In addition, almost all components are weight-optimized.
