The Bernau (b Berlin) train station is one of two train stations in the city of Bernau near Berlin . It is a long-distance and regional train station and the terminus of line S2 of the Berlin S-Bahn . The station is in the Berlin C fare zone of the Berlin-Brandenburg transport association .

The entrance building with counter hall, staircase and platform is also under monument protection as the repair hall of the S-Bahn in the south-western area of the station.

history

The station was opened on August 1, 1842 on the Berlin-Eberswalde section of the Berlin-Szczecin Railway Company . Until August 15, 1843 the extension to the Pomeranian capital Stettin ( Szczecin ) took place.

From 1913 to 1916, a separate pair of tracks was built on the Stettiner Bahn for suburban traffic, which ended in Bernau. By 1924, the suburban tracks were electrified with 750 volts direct current and a busbar on the side , which initiated the “great electrification” of all other Berlin city, ring and suburban railways. On August 8, 1924, electrical on-site operation began (from 1925 with the Bernau-type trains designed for this route ), which was operated under the name " S-Bahn " from December 1, 1930 .

On September 24, 1989 at 5 a.m., a class 277 train drove over the buffer stop . The leading bogie of the first car crashed into the station building.

For the multiple units, a three-tier railcar hangar was available in Bernau, which was initially subordinate to the Berlin Nordbahnhof depot and later to the Berlin-Grünau depot. In 2001 the hall was closed.

remodeling

The station and the forecourt have been extensively modernized and redesigned since 2009. In addition to the creation of barrier-free access and the increase in clarity, the station forecourt was upgraded as a mobility hub and transfer point between the train station, renovated and covered bus stops as well as car, taxi and bicycle parking spaces. The state of Brandenburg funded the renovation with 1.2 million euros.

At the station itself, the station concourse was renovated and the information and guidance system and lighting were renewed. The pedestrian underpass was renovated, the platform steps renewed and in April 2012 an elevator to the regional platform was put into operation. This was followed by the renewal of the long-distance platform, which was given a roof at the end of the renovation in summer 2013. Deutsche Bahn invested 4.5 million euros, of which 1.3 million euros came from the economic stimulus program.

A bicycle parking garage with 566 spaces in the immediate vicinity of the train station was opened in mid-2013. In addition to almost 500 free double-decker spaces, there are also lockable bike boxes available for a fee.

While the repair hall of the S-Bahn has been on the list of monuments for a long time, the entrance building of the station with counter hall, staircase and platform was also placed under monument protection in 2019.
