The Kehl station is named after the station Offenburg 's second largest train station in Baden-Wuerttemberg Ortenaukreis and next to the train station cork one of two railway stations of the city of Kehl .

location

The Kehl train station is very centrally located on the edge of the Kehl town center. There are several shops in the area around the station, including the “City Center Kehl” since 2009.

The state border between Germany and France is only 400 meters away , which makes the Kehler train station a border station .

There has been a free park-and-ride space behind the station since 2004 .

history

The construction of the railway bridge over the Rhine in 1861 made it possible for the first time to travel directly from Paris to Vienna by rail . The locomotive change required for this was carried out in Kehl.

Shortly before the Second World War , Kehl was in the so-called " Red Zone " on the Siegfried Line , which was cleared when the war broke out. On the night of September 3rd to 4th, 1939, the population of Kehler was evacuated to the Black Forest by special trains and was only allowed to return to their homeland after the occupation of France by German troops.

In 2004, a private investor acquired the properties at Kehler Bahnhof from Deutsche Bahn and renovated the property for use by government offices, businesses and hotels . At the same time, the city of Kehl carried out major reconstruction work on the station forecourt (with the creation of the so-called "Ortenauplatz") and a large part of the B 28 up to the Europabrücke . In the same year, a multi-storey building was acquired opposite the train station and converted into a three-star hotel.

In 2008, the cities of Strasbourg and Kehl commissioned a feasibility study that included an extension of the Strasbourg tram from its end point at the time, Aristide Briand, to Kehl. At the end of 2009, a contract for a draft plan was signed. The planned extension of tram line D is intended to reduce road traffic (35,000 vehicles / day) and regular bus traffic (220,000 passengers / year) between the two cities. This required a fourth Rhine bridge near Kehl , construction of which began in 2014. The tram was officially opened with a big opening party on the last weekend in April 2017.

traffic

Due to its border location, Kehl has a high volume of traffic. The Kehler Bahnhof is the junction between the Ortenau S-Bahn , the Metro-Rhin of the French railway company SNCF , the tram line D and several regional bus routes.

The tariffs of the Ortenau tariff association (TGO) and the Compagnie des transports strasbourgeois (CTS) apply on all trains and buses that run here .

railroad

The Kehl train station is on the Magistrale für Europa , a high-speed line that runs from Paris via Strasbourg , Stuttgart , Munich and Vienna to Budapest .

Long-distance transport

While EuroCitys and Intercitys used to stop in Kehl, the station was last served in long-distance traffic at the end of 2013 , after the introduction of the Schengen area as a border station was largely restricted to internal aspects.

The last trip on December 14, 2009 was the last stop at Kehler train station for the Orient Express .

There are connections to ICE and TGV as well as long-distance traffic in general in Offenburg and Strasbourg .

Local transport

The Kehl station is now a stop for the SWEG , which runs in the direction of Strasbourg and in the opposite direction to Offenburg, as well as the Metro-Rhin of the French railway company SNCF , which runs on the same route. The regional traffic of TER Alsace and DB Regio Baden-Württemberg can be reached in Strasbourg or Appenweier .

On April 29, 2017, the extension of line D of the Strasbourg tram was opened over the new Rhine bridge . She got a stop at the Kehler train station. The continuation via the university to Kehl town hall has been in operation since November 23, 2018 . The free ride with the German disabled pass is limited to the Baden Rhine.

Tram line D operates between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. every 12 to 15 minutes (during rush hour ) or every 20 minutes (off- peak hours). After crossing the Rhine, Line D crosses the Strasbourg urban area in an east-west direction and reaches the central line junction Homme de Fer and the local train station there .

bus

Local public transport (ÖPNV) on the road is served by several bus lines operated by SWEG , DB subsidiary Südwestbus and Stadtwerke Strasbourg (CTS).

Regional buses

There are direct bus connections to Rheinau , Offenburg , Lahr / Black Forest and Willstätt , among others .

As part of the expansion of tram line D, the city of Kehl had a transport planning office create a mobility concept in various variants. The main points of this concept are the creation of a junction for bus traffic (except long-distance buses) at Kehl town hall, near the future tram terminus. The bus lines should meet there every 30 minutes. New city lines are to be created that connect parts of the city that are not or, from the city's point of view, insufficiently developed to the bus network.

After the opening of the tram line, the previous bus line 21, which connected Kehl and Strasbourg and whose task the new tram line has taken over, was discontinued.

Long-distance buses

After the turn of the millennium, the bus station at Kehl train station developed into the new hub for national and international public transport . Lines 010 ( Freiburg - Saarbrücken ) and 011 ( Constance - Dortmund ) from Flixbus cross in Kehl . The company DeinBus offers connections to South Baden (Freiburg, Europa Park ) after Trier and after Nordbaden ( Mannheim , Heidelberg ) on. There are direct connections to France , Spain and Poland through Eurolines .
