The Ortenau-S-Bahn GmbH (short: OSB ) was a 100 percent subsidiary of the Südwestdeutsche Landesverkehrs-AG (SWEG) . From May 1998 to December 2014 it operated local rail passenger transport on several routes in the Ortenau district as well as connections to Strasbourg ( France ) since 2003 and since December 2004 along the Kinzig to Freudenstadt . These routes are still operated under this name today, but the Ortenau-S-Bahn GmbH company no longer exists. Instead, Ortenau-S-Bahn is now a SWEG brand.

In contrast to many other S-Bahn lines , the lines are not designated with S1 , S2 etc., but with a name or with the timetable numbers (KBS). The usual logo (white “S” on a green circle) is not used because the Ortenau S-Bahn is a regional train in character . The term S-Bahn appears only for advertising purposes in the company name of Ortenau-S-Bahn GmbH.

New allocation of services in 2014

The new transport contract , which runs until 2021, has been in force since the timetable change in December 2014 . The offer was expanded, among other things to connect the Hausach – Hornberg connection on the Black Forest Railway with the new Gutach Freilichtmuseum stop at Vogtsbauernhof . This line is in Hausach with the trains to Freudenstadt winged (divided). In addition, the Achertal and Harmersbachtalbahn were included in the network, on both routes the offer was condensed to an almost hourly service and expanded into the evening. Thus, the routes of the Achertal and Harmersbachtalbahn are no longer operated independently by SWEG, but as a service ordered by the state of Baden-Württemberg according to the transport contract. Permanent financing of both routes and their maintenance is secured. Two additional pairs of trains are now being used on the Offenburg – Kehl route in order to close previous gaps in the timetable in the morning and evening. On the Renchtalbahn (Bad Griesbach – Offenburg) an additional ride is offered for schoolchildren in the morning. In addition, the transport contract provides for the procurement of two handicapped-accessible railcars for the additional offer, equipping all railcars with WiFi , higher capacities for taking bicycles on the Kinzigtalbahn (Hausach-Freudenstadt) and optimizing the information system.

vehicles

The Ortenau-S-Bahn GmbH had 24 vehicles of the type Regio-Shuttle RS1 , which belonged to the parent company SWEG from the beginning. The first 18 railcars were still built by Adtranz , five of these vehicles have SNCF approval to serve the Krimmeri-Meinau and Strasbourg-Ville stations on the Appenweier – Strasbourg railway line after Kehl station . The six VT 527-532 railcars were delivered by Stadler Rail in June 2005, they have a passenger information system . The destination displays located below the windshield, the upper peak light is integrated at the previous point in the region of the disc.

The depot for all Ortenau S-Bahn railcars is the Ottenhöfen depot ; individual railcars are only parked in Oberharmersbach-Riersbach. In 2014, two more Regio-Shuttles were bought second-hand for the expanded offer.

criticism

At first there was criticism of the Ortenau S-Bahn vehicles, such as the lack of sound insulation in the engines and the lack of toilets . The faulty arrangement of the exhaust pipes , which were installed directly in front of the air conditioning intake openings , was also criticized. This design flaw has now been eliminated.
