The Rastenburger Kleinbahnen were a railway company that emerged from the Rastenburg – Sensburg – Lötzener Kleinbahnen in the middle of the province of East Prussia .
The enterprise
The district town of the former East Prussian district of Rastenburg was connected to the network of the East Prussian Southern Railway from 1867/68 by the Königsberg – Lyck railway line . While in the west of the district in Korschen after the construction of the Insterburg – Allenstein line by the Prussian State Railways, an important railway junction was created as early as 1871 , the city of Rastenburg had to wait until 1907/08 for the Prussian State Railway to extend the railway network through further routes to Angerburg and Heilsberg added.
The Rastenburg – Sensburger Kleinbahn was founded with the aim of opening up the northern district area and creating connections to the neighboring district of Sensburg to the south . When the city of Rhine in the Lötzen district was also connected, the company was expanded and from around 1905 it was called Rastenburg – Sensburg – Lötzener Kleinbahn. Around 1910, the three circles involved converted it into the Rastenburger Kleinbahn GmbH. The company was run by the East German Railway Company in Königsberg (ODEG).
On June 30, 1924, the Rastenburger Kleinbahn GmbH was incorporated into the Insterburger Kleinbahn-AG, which was then called Ostpreußische Kleinbahnen AG .
The route network
The first lines were opened on May 1, 1898 with a gauge of 750 mm. A 30 km long route ran from the Rastenburg small train station to the small train station Sensburg , the other as a branch line to Salpkeim , also located in the Sensburg district. This was followed by the expansion from the small train station Sensburg to the state train station (three kilometers) and from Salpkeim to the small town of Rhein in the district of Lötzen on November 8, 1903 and July 7, 1905 , respectively. The route to Reimsdorf , seven kilometers from Rastenburg, was the route for both Use branches together.
The northern route led from Rastenburg via Wenden to Drengfurth ; A branch line to Barten branched off from it in Wenden .
The network was according to the statistics of 1902 = 83.3 km and 1908 = 95.8 km long.
The further construction to the north was delayed by the First World War. Von Barten , which incidentally had a terminal station, was connected to the state railway in Gerdauen (20 km); Likewise, the stretch from Skandlack was extended first to the Masurian Canal and then to Nordenburg by 13 kilometers; July 25, 1916 and June 15, 1917 are given as the opening dates. The sources on this question are not entirely clear.
In Nordenburg a connection to the narrow-gauge Insterburger Kleinbahn had now been established. The Rastenburg network had thus reached a circumference of 127 kilometers and, together with that of the Insterburger Kleinbahn of 231 kilometers in length, formed one of the largest narrow-gauge networks in Germany.
The railway's own motor traffic was opened on September 15, 1929. Four lines were used which led from Rastenburg to Barten, Drengfurt and Sensburg and from Angerburg via Drengfurt and Barten to Korschen.
In 1939 the following vehicles were available for the Rastenburger Kleinbahnen: nine steam locomotives, eleven passenger cars, seven pack wagons and 110 freight cars as well as four buses.
After the Second World War
The operation of the station Kętrzyn Wąskotorowy, from 1945 to September 1, 1946 Rastembork Wąskotorowy , ( German Rastenburg narrow-gauge station ) was set in June 1971.
The Rastenburg – Sensburg and Reimsdorf – Rhine routes were destroyed in 1945 by the effects of the war.
On July 22, 1948, the railway line between Kętrzyn (Rastenburg) and Mrągowo (Sensburg) was reopened for freight and passenger traffic. On July 1, 1966, all traffic between Sławkowo (Reimsdorf) and Mrągowo was suspended, and this section of the route was dismantled as early as July 1966. On June 1, 1971, all traffic between Sławkowo and Kętrzyn was discontinued and the route section dismantled.
On May 1, 1949, freight and passenger traffic between Sławkowo (Reimsdorf) and Ryn (Rhine) could be put back into operation until it was completely stopped on June 1, 1971. The dismantling of the line began in June 1971.
