Bajory Wielkie ( German Groß Bajohren , 1938 to 1945 Großblankenfelde ) is a village in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship . It belongs to the Gmina Srokowo (rural community Drengfurth ) in the powiat Kętrzyński ( Rastenburg district ).
Geographical location
Bajory Wielkie is located on the Masurian Canal ( Kanał Mazurski in Polish ), just three kilometers south of the state border with the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast (Königsberg region) . The former district town of Gerdauen ( Schelesnodoroschny in Russian ) is 15 kilometers to the northwest. Today's district metropolis Kętrzyn ( German Rastenburg ) is 26 kilometers to the southwest.
history
Local history
The village once called Groß Bajohren was founded in 1400. In 1785 it is mentioned as a " köllmisch village with 16 fireplaces".
On April 9, 1874 United Bajohren office Village and thus its name to an administrative district that existed until 1945 and the county Gerdauen in the administrative district of Kaliningrad in the Prussian province of East Prussia belonged. After Groß Bajohren had been renamed "Großblankenfelde" on June 3, 1938 - with effect from July 16, 1938 - the district was also renamed "Großblankenfelde District" - with a delay on November 8, 1938.
In 1945, as a result of the war, all of southern East Prussia was transferred to Poland . This also affected Groß Bajohren / Großblankenfelde, and the village received the Polish form of the name “Najory Wielkie”. Today it is the seat of a Schulzenamt ( Polish Sołectwo ) and thus a place in the network of the rural community Srokowo (Drengfurth) in the powiat Kętrzyński ( Rastenburg district ), until 1998 the Olsztyn Voivodeship , since then part of the Warmia-Masurian Voivodeship .

Evangelical
Before 1945, the majority of the population of Groß Bajohren and Großblankenfeld were Protestant . The village belonged to the parish of Nordenburg ( Russian Krylowo ) in the church province of East Prussia of the Church of the Old Prussian Union . Today the few evangelical residents of Bajory Wielkie are oriented towards the church in Brzeźnica (Birkenfeld) , which is a branch church of the Johanneskirche Kętrzyn in the diocese of Masuria of the Evangelical-Augsburg Church in Poland .
Catholic
The numerically few Catholics in Groß Bajohren or Großblankenfelde were incorporated into the distant parish of St. Bruno Insterburg ( Chernyachovsk in Russian ) in what was then the Diocese of Warmia until 1945 . Today, the majority of the Catholic residents are oriented towards Brzeźnica , whose church is a branch church of the Holy Cross Church in Srokowo in the current Archdiocese of Warmia .

Bajory Wielkie is located on a side road that branches off from Voivodship Road 650 at Srokowo (Drengfurth) and via Srokowski Dwór (Drengfurthshof) and Bajory Małe (Klein Bajohren , 1938 to 1945 Kleinblankenfelde) to Brzeźnica (Birkenfeld) in the immediate vicinity of the Polish-Russian Limit leads. In addition, side streets from the neighboring towns of Goszczewo (Adolfshof) and Wyskok (Friedenshof) end in Bajory Wielkie.

Until 1945, Groß Bajohren or Großblankenfelde was a train station on the Barten – Nordenburg railway operated by the Rastenburger Kleinbahnen . As a result of the war, the route was reactivated. So today there is no connection to rail traffic .

The geographically closest international airport is Kaliningrad Airport , which, however, can only be used to a limited extent due to its location outside the European Union . The closest airport on Polish territory is Gdansk Airport .
