Swell:

The Kempten (Allgäu) –Neu-Ulm is a non-electrified and predominantly single-track main line from Kempten (Allgäu) via Memmingen to Neu-Ulm . It follows the course of the Iller along its entire length and is therefore also called the Illertalbahn or Illerbahn . The route from Kellmünz to Neu-Ulm is integrated into the Donau-Iller-Nahverkehrsverbund (DING). In the course book it is listed under number 975, the section between Memmingen and Neu-Ulm is also part of the course book route 756.

history

Since the construction of weirs and hydroelectric power stations during industrialization brought rafting to a standstill and road transport was not worthwhile, in 1843 some of the citizens of Kempten came up with the idea of a railway line to Neu-Ulm. However, the state had no interest in building another railway in this area.

Because the city of Memmingen in the Bavarian district of Swabia was not involved in the planning of the country's first railways, the city took the initiative to build the line and received the concession for it on September 13, 1861 . For this purpose, she took out a loan of around 3.5 million guilders and had to take care of the land purchase and construction work herself. The first section to Memmingen was opened on October 12, 1862, the second on June 1, 1863. The cities of Memmingen (leading) and Kempten took out a loan through a private company for financing.

The Royal Bavarian State Railways provided the vehicles and ran the operation on the route they leased . Because of the more than local importance of the railway, the Bavarian state acquired it on April 12, 1876. Thus the private company's mortgage was also replaced.

Since the completion of the Neu-Ulm 21 rail project in 2009, the Illertalbahn has had two tracks from the new transfer point at the Finninger Straße stop to the Neu-Ulm trough station .

Expansion plans

Deutsche Bahn intends to upgrade the line for a top speed of 160 km / h. For this it is necessary to close a few smaller level crossings and to adjust the remaining ones, which could lead to delays due to objections.

It is planned to integrate the Memmingen – Neu-Ulm section into the Donau-Iller regional S-Bahn and to open five to six new stops in the course of this .

In mid-May 2015. by the representatives of the eleven municipalities situated along the route Memmingen-Neu-Ulm, the two counties Neu-Ulm and Memmingen and the Regional Association Danube-Iller the syndicate Iller Valley Railway founded. Above all, she wants to campaign for the construction of a second track, electrification and the establishment of further stations in the southern section.

According to the concept of the Bavarian state government for more electromobility on the rails in Bavaria, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann proposed the route for electrification from a Bavarian perspective. As a result, the former Bavarian State Minister for Housing, Building and Transport Hans Reichhart announced at a meeting with IG Illertalbahn in early 2020 that the expansion of the Neu-Ulm-Memmingen route as part of the Danube-Iller regional S-Bahn with 330 Million euros is to be funded. In the first stage of the timetable change in December 2020, the three-stage concept provides for the regional S-Bahn to start on the Ulm – Memmingen and Ulm – Senden – Weißenhorn routes with new diesel multiple units. The Gerlenhofen train station is also reactivated with an hourly stop. In a second step, Senden station will be modernized at a cost of 23 million euros, so that above all the train frequency towards Weißenhorn can be increased. Preparatory work for this took place during a four-week route closure in March / April 2020. Furthermore, the planning for the new stations in Pleß, Fellheim, Heimertingen, Memmingen-Amendingen and at the Memmingen vocational training center is to start in 2020 and the Gerlenhofen train station is to be relocated closer to the town center. It will also be investigated whether a new stop can be built north of Senden. In the third expansion stage, the Neu-Ulm – Kempten and Senden – Weißenhorn lines are to be electrified and the two-track system between Gerlenhofen and Senden and between Kellmünz and Pleß will be established.

business

The line between Memmingen and Neu-Ulm is one of the busiest single-track railway lines in Germany, especially in the area between Senden and Neu-Ulm. An average of around 7500 passengers per day are transported here (as of 2018).

Regional train

The regional trains run every hour from Memmingen to Ulm Hauptbahnhof and usually stop everywhere except in Gerlenhofen, which is only served by individual trains. Individual trains start in Kempten (Allgäu), and they come once a day from Oberstdorf and Wangen in Allgäu . The trains consist of class 642 and Talent diesel multiple units , previously class 628 or 650 . In the past, services, especially in the outskirts of the day or in rush hour traffic, were also driven by trains of n-type cars hauled by class 218 locomotives and class 612 , 611 and 642 diesel multiple units. Since December 2013 regional trains have also run hourly from Ulm via Neu-Ulm and Senden to Weißenhorn.

Regional Express

Most of the regional express trains run every hour from Kempten (Allgäu) to Ulm, some come from Lindau or Oberstdorf. All Regional Express trains have stopped in Illertissen since December 2011.

Up until the timetable change on December 15, 2013, the Regional Express trains consisted of class 612 diesel multiple units or n-wagons hauled by a class 218 locomotive, since then all services have been provided by class 612 diesel multiple units. The only remaining pair of trains hauled by locomotives is the Snow Express on Saturdays in winter between Stuttgart and Oberstdorf and back.

Intercity Allgäu

The Allgäu intercity train pair travels from Magdeburg via Ulm to Oberstdorf and back. The train runs from Ulm as a regional express and can be used with local transport tickets. It is hauled by two class 218 diesel locomotives between Stuttgart and Oberstdorf . The return train is, however, an intercity on the entire route and may therefore not be used with local transport tickets.

Accident in July 2013

On July 17, 2013, a traffic accident involving a train occurred shortly before the Kellmünz train station. A class 612 multiple unit with about 50 people, which operated as a regional train, derailed after it collided with a motor vehicle at an open level crossing. One of the train's wagons tipped off the rails, turned 180 degrees and lay on the side next to the rails. Three people were seriously injured in the accident, including the driver and one person who was thrown from the train. To avoid further accidents at this point, a restricted level crossing will be set up there in 2016.
