history

The branch association “Zur Barigauer Höhe” emerged from the Thuringian Forest Association in 1911 and was officially founded on March 29, 1911. This association made it their goal to build a massive refuge on the Barigauer Höhe . The necessary approval procedure was submitted by the then Barigau mayor, Lange, in April 1912. On June 19, 1912, a construction drawing, which was created by master bricklayer Hilmar Abicht from Unterweißbach on behalf of the Thuringian Forest branch association "Zur Barigauer Höhe", was submitted to the competent office in Königsee . This drawing is kept in the Thuringian State Archives in Rudolstadt . It was the basis for the 9 m high observation tower with the basic dimensions 4.52 × 4.52 m.

On July 8, 1912, the Prince's District Administrator Dr. Sattler approved the construction drawing to the community council in Barigau . The foundation stone was laid on the Barigauer Höhe on the same day, and a sealed document was walled in. Construction supervision was entrusted to the Princely Gendarme Stroh in Herschdorf . Already on August 10, 1912, Gendarme Stroh reported "obediently back" ... "that the building had been carried out in accordance with consensus". Thus, the construction time was only a good month, with a cost of 2700M. The Thuringian Forest Association Eisenach praised the bricklayer and stove fitter Magnus Oberländer from Barigau as one of the main initiators of the tower construction. Quote for the Thuringian Forest Association:

“In August of this year, the inauguration of the observation tower took place on the 665 meter high Barigauer Höhe . This again draws attention to a viewpoint of particular beauty. From the Barigauer Höhe you can see 43 villages, towns, lookout towers and well-known mountain peaks, including the Leuchtenburg in Seitenroda , the Kulm (Saalfeld) , the Baropturm near Keilhau , the Tonndorfer Schloss near Kranichfeld , the ruins near Ehrenstein, the Steiger near Erfurt , the three equals near Arnstadt , the Schneekopf , Ilmenau , Langewiesen , the Karl-Eduard-Warte near Elgersburg , Gehren , the Langen Berg with the new Günther-Marienturm, Großbreitenbach , Masserberg , Wurzelberg near Katzhütte , Meuselbach , Cursdorf , Meuselbacher Kuppe , Fröbelturm near Oberweißbach , Neuhaus , the Meuraberge, Braunsdorf . "

"The distance from the Barigauer Höhe is 2 hours from Gehren , 1 hour from Königsee , 1 ½ hours from Schwarzburg , 1 ¼ hours from Sitzendorf , ¾ hours from Mellenbach ."

A contract dated February 17, 1938 states that the Thuringian Forest Association will own the property “No. 183/1081, the long gut at Heinberge 5, with 46a arable land; 0.22a courtyard with a lookout tower to the Barigauer Höhe “. In the course of this, the association financed the thorough renovation of the very dilapidated tower by the construction company Otto Küfner from Königsee . The repairs were estimated at 239.62 RM.

After the end of the Second World War, the tower building was affected by a lightning strike, and all wooden objects such as windows and doors were used as fire material by the needy population, so that only the outer shell of the tower building remained. Between 1946 and 1949 some citizens with ties to their homeland got together to build a temporary restaurant. After the merger of the villages of Oberhain , Barigau, Unterhain and Mankenbach into one large community, the Thuringian Forest Association, on the initiative of the Barigau mayor of the community on April 1, 1950, transferred the Barigau Tower, which was not used after the war. Since January 1, 1951, the municipality of Oberhain has been registered as a legal entity in the land registry. Since the funds for the renovation were missing in the community treasury, the citizens of the community donated 3,000 marks for the construction work in 1953.

Visitors could climb the tower again as early as 1954. At that time, the first tower owner Fritz Rusch was already running a small sales point out of the tower. The tower staircase was used as a warehouse. In 1957, on the initiative of many citizens, the council of the municipality of Oberhain decided to add a restaurant. A construction drawing by Horst Grauel from Oberhain was attached to the applications. It shows the lounge and a kitchen and toilet annex. The local farmers provided 8,000 marks for the construction. The cultivation began in 1957. With 2,644 voluntary hours of work by the residents of the municipality of Oberhain, the restaurant with 35 seats was completed in June 1959.

Among other things, through the initiative of the chairman of the council of the district, Jürgen Heinze, the tower was given a roofed dome and all-round glazing in 1960. Work on expanding the site has continued since the early 1960s. For example, the building was connected to the public water supply between 1964 and 1965. In 1968 an outbuilding was built to accommodate the tower landlords. Two years later, a garage was added to this bungalow and the water supply was connected.

In 1974 the “Freundeskreis Barigauer Turm” was officially founded under the chairmanship of Horst Grauel. With the construction of a new open-air stage, a fixed dance hall, a portable shooting gallery and a bowling alley, it was possible to make better use of the area culturally. After all, the Barigauer Höhe is the highest elevation in what was then the Rudolstadt district . In 1976 the first "Tower Festival" took place under the direction of the "Freundeskreis Barigauer Turm". On July 1, 1982 the council of the Rudolstadt district decided to give the Barigau Tower the status of a monument.

Between 1982 and 1986 the tower was completely rebuilt. In the course of the restaurant expansion to 60 seats in 1983, a partial basement was built and a new tower staircase was built. A modern kitchen and toilet facilities as well as a club room with 25 seats were also built. The interior of the restaurant alone had a value of 16,000 M. In the 1980s, the friends of the tower created values totaling 145,000 marks, with over 2000 hours worked.

The Gunhild and Manfred Wölk couple from Königsee have been running the restaurant since 1986 . In 1990 the “Friends of the Barigauer Turm” became the “Thuringian Traditionsverein Oberhain eV” (TTVO eV). He also organized the 14th Tower Festival as the first after the political change. In the next few years, the newly founded association, which is colloquially referred to as the “tower association”, focused on expanding and converting the rooms. In 1990, among other things, the electrical connection to the stage was renewed. In 1992 the tower dome and the windows in the tower as well as the tower staircase were renewed. Furthermore, in 1992 the 80th anniversary of the Barigau Tower was celebrated. At that time a chronicle was worked out and presented in the tower staircase. In 1993 the kitchen and heating in the restaurant were renovated. In 1994 the roof of the adjoining building was renewed and a water connection was installed in the changing room behind the stage, which was now used as a club room. In 1995 members of the association installed direction and distance boards in the tower dome. The stage, dance floor and bowling alley were concreted in 1996.

Also in the recent past the members of the association took care of the maintenance of the site on a voluntary basis, they were supported by the municipality of Oberhain with manpower and equipment. Not only because of its exposed location, but above all because of the initiative of the current tower owners, the area is also a popular meeting point for cyclists and mobile home drivers.

The organizers of the tower festival have struggled with falling visitor numbers in recent years. The number of members in the association is also steadily declining. In 2011, for the first time, there was no tower festival. From August 9 to 12, 2012, the municipality of Oberhain celebrated the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Barigau Tower with the support of all local associations with many visitors. At the end of 2012, the Thuringian traditional association Oberhain eV dissolved.
