Bartholomew "Batt" O'Keeffe ( Irish Parthalán Ó Caoimh ; born April 2, 1945 in Cullen , County Cork ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and from 2010 to 2011 Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation.

biography

After graduating, he worked as a lecturer at the Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and began his national political career in 1987 as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil with the first election as Member of Parliament ( Teachta Dála ) of the Lower House ( Dáil Éireann ), in which he remained until 1989 represented the constituency of Cork South-Central .

After he suffered an election defeat in 1989 and left the House of Commons, he became a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) as a representative of the group of workers . In 1992 he was re-elected as a member of the Dáil, where he initially represented the constituency of Cork South-Central and, since 2007, the constituency of Cork North-West .

During his long membership in parliament he was from March 15, 1995 to May 15, 1997 Chairman of the House Committee on Development Promotion and from December 2, 1997 to 2002 Chairman of the House Committee on Health and Children.

On September 29, 2004, Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Bertie Ahern appointed him Minister of State in the Ministry of the Environment, Inheritance and Local Administration, taking on his first government office as "Junior Minister". As such, he was most recently responsible for housing construction, urban renewal and development areas from June 2007 to May 2008.

On May 7, 2008, Brian Cowen , Ahern's successor as Prime Minister, appointed him Minister of Education and Science. Batt O'Keeffe has served as Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation in the Cowen Cabinet since the March 23, 2010 cabinet reshuffle.
