Baugé Castle

Bauge is a town and commune Déléguée in the French community Baugé-en-Anjou with 3,782 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Maine-et-Loire in the region of Pays de la Loire . The landscape around Baugé is called Pays Baugeois .

geography

Baugé is located at the confluence of the Altrée in the Couasnon river , about 40 kilometers northeast of Angers . Near Baugé is the approximately 10,000 hectare Chandelais forest, which goes back to the House of Anjou and is considered one of the most remarkable domain forests in France.

history

Dolmens and menhirs indicate early settlement in the area. It was first mentioned in a contract between Charlemagne and the House of Anjou. However, this still affected the settlement area two kilometers to the south, today known as Le Vieil-Baugé . It was not until 999 that the Lords of Saumur built a fortification at a strategically favorable location, around which a settlement gradually developed. In 1421, the Auld Alliance won the Battle of Baugé in the Hundred Years War and turned fate against the English. The Baugé Castle , built by Duke René from 1445, became his preferred hunting stay.

From 1800 to 1926 Baugé was the seat of an arrondissement.

On January 1, 2013, the municipalities of Baugé, Montpollin , Pontigné , Saint-Martin-d'Arcé and Le Vieil-Baugé were merged into a nouvelle commune called Baugé-en-Anjou. After the merger, Baugé forms the main town (French chef-lieu ) of this association.
