On April 14, 1981, the mountain was declared a nature reserve by ordinance of the Koblenz district government . The protected area has a size of 127 hectares and includes parts of the Niederzissen and Waldorf districts. The protective purpose is the preservation of the cinder cone with a lava flow flowing to the northeast , because of its special geological importance and as a location for rare plant species and plant communities and as a habitat for rare animal species for scientific reasons. The well-developed ring wall on the Bausenberg is also part of the protected area.
