legend

Among other things, Gottfried Kinkel remarks about Teufelsley: “This extremely fantastic rock rises on a narrow mountain ridge, so that it looks as if the mass had been shattered by a terrible shock from the east. There is no doubt that the legend of the castle, which the devil erected sky high here in spite of God, is based on this observation made earlier by the people with their usual natural acumen. (…) This time, as always, it turned out badly for the devil: His half-finished castle was shattered with a single blow of God's hand, and the rock really gives the impression of a Cyclopean castle ruin. ”However, there is no historical news of a possible castle on Teufelsley or even construction remains.

Protected areas

The rocky summit region of the Teufelsley was declared an An der Teufelsley nature reserve on June 4, 1926 by the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, Domains and Forests ( CDDA no. 82701; designated 1926, 4.4  hectares in size). The nature reserve was intended to "preserve the Teufelsley rock formations along with the existing collections of boulders". This was "forbidden to remove, damage or otherwise change the rock formations located on the protected area and the boulders there". There are also parts of on the mountain landscape reserve Rhein-Ahr-Eifel (CDDA No. 323834;. 1980; 925.3593  sq km ) and the bird sanctuary Ahrgebirge (VSG No. 5507-401;. 304.23 square kilometers).
