The lake is a breeding ground for water birds such as grebes , Bless Rail , Moorhen , reed warbler , reed bunting important and others as well as staging and wintering area for water-bound birds, he just completely freezes over in extremely harsh winters. Shell, pochard, teal and teal can always be seen here in winter.

Because the need for protection is lower in summer, the protection period extends from October to March and the lake can also be used for tourism in summer.

history

In earlier centuries two drainage tunnels were built, so that the water level of the Laacher See is around twelve meters lower than it was originally. The increasing awareness of the lake's importance for nature led to the establishment of the nature reserve in 1926 very early on. The mining of pumice made it necessary to expand the area in 1940. A planned use in the program “ Strength through Joy ” of the NS regime was not realized. After the Second World War , tourist interest in the lake increased. Since rules are essential in this area of tension between nature and tourism , a new ordinance came into force on April 1, 1981, in order to protect nature more efficiently. This was expanded again on December 14, 1989. Since then, sports and camping are only allowed from April 15 to September 30.
