The carpet layer's wife is a crime film in the crime series Bella Block by director Kai Wessel from 2005. In the lead role , Hannelore Hoger plays the Hamburg chief inspector Bella Block, who almost witnesses a rape during a shopping spree, which she does not prevent out of carelessness.

action

Bella Block is shopping in a shopping mall with her partner Simon when they witness an argument between a couple. Without paying much attention to what is happening, they continue on their way. Maria, an asparagus cutter from Poland, cannot, however, defend herself against the intrusiveness of the man who is apparently accompanying her. She speaks to various passers-by, but receives no help from them. Eventually, she is raped by the man in public.

At the police interrogation the man denies any guilt; he claims to have done no violence to Mary. Only the witnesses of the crime could prove the opposite. Although it does not belong in Bella Block's jurisdiction, she takes on the case and tries to track down the witnesses. Not an easy task, especially since public prosecutor Mehlhorn is stubborn.

Bella Block is not deterred by these circumstances and, in the course of her investigation, increasingly comes to the realization that each of the witnesses has different memories of the crime. In the further course of the plot there is a dinner to which Bella is invited by her partner Simon. There is asparagus. In Bella's memory, this again evokes the fact that she classified the supposedly small quarrel between Maria and her companion as harmless, did not intervene and thus did not prevent the subsequent rape.

Meanwhile, Bella Block is investigating a murder case in which a woman stabs her husband, who was drunk at the time, to death. Although Bella Block largely delegated the investigation in this case to her new colleague Jan Martensen, it is she who ultimately convicts the perpetrator, who is on the run.

The plot ends when Bella Block manages to get Prosecutor Mehlhorn on her side. She can therefore persuade the main witness of the rape offense to give her testimony in court in order to arrest the perpetrator. In the resumed court proceedings, it is also made clear that several witnesses to the criminal offense are guilty of failure to provide assistance .
