The Happiness of Others is a crime film in the crime series Bella Block by director Christian von Castelberg from 2006. In the lead role , Hannelore Hoger plays the Hamburg chief inspector Bella Block, who enlists the help of a lip reader to solve a murder.

action

The chief inspector Bella Block is asked for help by her young colleague Jan Martensen: The young thief Manu, with whom the department store thief Felix fell in love, is missing. Since no body has yet been found, the commissioner does not initially believe in a murder. However, two suspicious people suddenly appear: the elderly couple Otto and Anna Luckner, whose neighbor is the missing woman, is suspected of murder because of their contradicting statements.

In the course of the investigation, the inspector learns that Otto has often filmed the happy love between Felix and Manu with a video camera, while his wife Anna tries to attract suspicion of murder.

However, Bella Block suspects Felix, the life partner of Manu, who is alleged to have been murdered, of the perpetrator. A lip reader comes to her aid, who can decipher the video recordings that Otto made and is therefore an important aid in solving the case.

In addition, the viewer learns that Bella Block is also burdened by circumstances that affect her personally during her investigation. At first she is irritated and unsettled by the peculiar behavior of her partner. At first she suspects that he has a lover until he tells her that he has prostate cancer. Due to this life-threatening circumstance, an unfamiliar closeness develops between her and her partner.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach is of the opinion that The Happiness of Others is a "[g] frantic book about the dying of emotions with a complex mirroring and projection architecture. Stylistically perfectly staged. Played with a rich variety of notes. "

The program magazine TV Spielfilm appreciates that in his third Bella Block film, director Christian von Castelberg “is [...] again a stylist: In suggestive images he illuminates the mirror image of two relationships: a poetic chamber play about love and loneliness. ”The conclusion is:“ Odd journey into imploded emotional cosms ”.
