Bergweiler is a district of the Tholey municipality in the St. Wendel district in Saarland . The place had 734 inhabitants at the end of 2007. Until the end of 1973 Bergweiler was an independent municipality .
geography
The place is about 3.5 kilometers southwest of the main municipality Tholey at 275 to 290 meters above sea level . It is located at the foot of the approximately 340 meter high and wooded Blasiusberg . The closest places are Sotzweiler in the south and Dörsdorf in the west.
The river Theel flows through the village, where the village operates a hydroelectric power station , the Eckert mill . It has an output of around 27 kW .
history
In 1927, objects from the late Latène period and the remains of a Roman settlement were found during earthworks .
Bergweiler is a medieval place and was initially in the area of the Tholey Abbey. After the Thirty Years' War , the village was completely deserted except for one resident who also relocated a short time later. In a report from 1791 the place was mentioned as Villers im Loch .
Today's Blasius Chapel was built in 1716, but had previously burned down. During the French Revolution , the Benedictine brother Wilhelm Frank fled there, who is still known as "Brother Lappes" today. In 1909 the chapel became the property of the parish of Tholey.
Was assigned to the canton of Tholey until 1814 , in the Moselle department .
As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reform , the previously independent municipality of Bergweiler was assigned to the municipality of Tholey on January 1, 1974.
The place already took part in the competition Our village should be more beautiful . In the last few years the town center has been redesigned and old farmhouses have been renovated.
Origin of name
The name of the place is made up of the components "mountain" and "hamlet". The Blasiusberg was often only called "mountain" by the villagers, the place itself only "hamlet".
traffic
The main road from Bergweiler is Landesstraße 324, which runs from Sotzweiler in a north-south direction. In the vicinity of the place is the federal highway 1 with the junctions Tholey and Tholey-Hasborn , which can be reached quickly from the place. In Sotzweiler there is a connection to the federal highway 269 to Tholey and Lebach .
Worth seeing
The Blasius Chapel is located in a remote part of Bergweiler on the Blasiusberg. There is also the Erasmus Chapel in the village center . Bergweiler does not have its own church. St. Mauritius in nearby Sotzweiler has always served as the parish church .
