The National Library of Malta ( Bibljoteka Nazzjonali ta 'Malta , National Library of Malta ) is located in the city of Valletta on the island of Malta . Its origins go back to the 16th century.

history

The collection of the National Library of Malta was founded by the Order of St. John . The oldest holdings came from crusaders who, according to a decree of 1555, were inherited. The Knight of the Order of Malta, Bailli Fra Jean Louis Guérin de Tencin , is considered to be the founder of the library. He died in 1766 and left 9,700 volumes.

Under British occupation, the library moved into on June 4, 1812, on the birthday of George III. , a new building. In 1925 she received the right to deposit copies . Since 1976 it has been officially known as the "National Library".
