Big Room ( English as "large room") is a subgenre of electro house -music. Dirty Dutch and trance , among others, are the basis . The term originated from the popularity of the genre at festivals and discos. The most famous representatives include Martin Garrix (who left the genre in 2015), Hardwell and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike .

Big room songs are often based on the ideas of Dutch house and electro house. The songs are mostly assembled from simple parts. The big room track usually consists of two drops and two breaks, each with a bridge that precedes them. Important characteristic features are the minimalistic use of percussions , catchy melodies, a beat that can be found in a sub-bass , simple melodies and so-called breakdowns created by synthesizers. The structure of a big room track is very similar to the layout of a typical electro house song, which acts as another reason why big room is described as a subgenre of electro house.

Crossovers

Due to the good suitability for festivals and DJ sets due to the simple structure, large amounts of crossovers with other genres were created. Build-up and kick are mostly based on the big room and the synthesis and sound effects are taken from other genres. Big room is considered a very controversial topic in the EDM scene and has been criticized by numerous music producers. The reason for the criticism is the supposedly monotonous EDM sound, which lacks creativity and originality. Mixmag described the genre as a fusion of "titanic breakdowns and flawless, monotonous production aesthetics (read:" lowest common denominator 'beats' ")." In a Reddit post by Wolfgang Gartner , Big-Room was described as a "joke", which was followed by Over-saturation at events as well as the sale of cheap dance music from major labels to teenagers resulting in major problems in the EDM industry were addressed.
