The Biomaris GmbH & Co. limited partnership is founded in 1934 by German companies of the remedies - and cosmetic industry based in Bremen . The family company specializes in Thalasso and sells its products worldwide under the BIOMARIS brand . The main component of the self-made products is seawater , which was obtained with our own ship off Heligoland from 1952 to 1982 and is now sourced from the Greenland Sea .
history
On July 25, 1934, the Bremen businessman Walter Brachmann founded the Biolabor Walter Brachmann GmbH & Co. KG . In 1937 he presented his Thalasso-based Helgoland seawater spa drink for the first time at the Leipzig Trade Fair and registered the Biomaris brand with the German Patent and Trademark Office on September 1, 1938 . Two years later the first German mineral water factories were supplied with sea water.
In 1946 the Biomaris GmbH branch Borkum was founded on the East Frisian North Sea island of Borkum and the first Biomaris bar was opened in the foyer built in 1912 to offer a drinking cure with seawater. The seawater was led to the treatment plant via a pipe about 400 meters long. From then on, the Wandelhalle was called the Trinkkurhalle and was the first in a North Sea resort. In the following years, further drinking spa halls and sales stands in spas on the North and Baltic Seas were set up and advertised in spa gazettes such as the Norderneyer spa courier . The company was also responsible for the introduction of the seawater drinking cure on the European continent.
After Walter Brachmann had proven the effectiveness of his product in a court case in the early 1950s, he was able to bring Biomaris vital , the first isotonic drink in bottles to the market. At around the same time, the Biolabor brand was registered. As a sole supplier and part of the spa culture, Biomaris achieved a high level of awareness in the following years and the sale of seawater drinking cures was expanded to the entire federal territory.
In 1952 Biomaris moved to the company's current headquarters in Bremen- Walle on Parallelweg in the Osterfeuerberg district . The newly built plant had an underground storage tank and a large Berkefeld filter system for sea water. In the same year the tour ship Atlantic , built in 1871, was acquired and converted into a seawater tanker. From 1955 onwards, the MS Biomaris Atlantic brought so-called deep water from the North Sea off Heligoland. In the same year the Biomaris drinking cure hall was built in Grömitz .
The range was subsequently expanded to include lemonades such as Biomaris Kola and the deep- sea orange drink , and sea salt was also sold to factories in Switzerland , Benelux and North and South America, which used it for the production of savory biscuits and dairy products. From 1960, Biomaris also developed and distributed skin creams with ingredients from seawater and supplied the pharmaceutical industry with treated seawater for nasal sprays .
At the beginning of the 1970s, the business area was expanded to include nutritional supplements such as vitamin , mineral and brewer's yeast tablets. The company was restructured for this purpose and the Biomaris division was spun off into the subsidiary Biomaris GmbH & Co. Kommanditgesellschaft , founded on March 2, 1971 . In the following years, Biomaris expanded its range of care products and introduced a distinctive triangular cream jar for branding .
In 1982 Biomaris decommissioned its tanker. Since then, the deep sea water has been delivered to Bremen in special containers and came from a north sea current near Greenland . In 1985 the company expanded its research area and in the years that followed developed numerous new products and product lines for cosmetics and wellness. Cosmetic studios were increasingly acquired as trading partners.
In 1993 the company replaced its previous logo, the Neptune with the drinking cup, with the current wave design. In 1997, the food supplements division was outsourced to the newly founded Biolabor zur Manufacture Pharma GmbH & Co. Kommanditgesellschaft . The Biolabor Walter Brachmann GmbH & Co renamed Walter Brachmann GmbH & Co. KG as a holding company. The reason was the sale of the Brachmann Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH with the outsourced bio laboratory to the former Eduscho boss Holger U. Birkigt by the owner family Winter, who remained with the Biomaris brand and company.
In 1999 Biomaris opened its first own beauty and wellness center in the North Sea resort of St. Peter-Ording , in addition to the existing drinking spa hall. A short time later, the first own overseas agencies followed in Thailand and South Korea. Until 2000 Biomaris was the only provider of seawater drinking cures. In the meantime, however, care products and make-up made up the majority of sales . At that time the range comprised over 300 products .
In December 2009, the Hamburg consumer center also criticized the Biomaris skin cream, which did not contain organic ingredients, although the name Biomaris would suggest otherwise. According to a dpa report, some media also reported on this . The company took this as an opportunity to change recipes and to focus more on natural cosmetics .
According to a company analysis carried out in 2012, the company invested more heavily in the brand in the following years and streamlined the range with a focus on face and body care. In December 2013, the Magazine awarded eco-test of Biomaris protecting cream med the top grade.
Companies
The Biomaris GmbH & Co. limited partnership is a family business in its third generation. It develops, produces and sells care products, cosmetics and drinking cures especially for thalasso and balneotherapy . The seawater required for production is obtained off the coast of Greenland and transported to Bremen in special containers. There it is stored and processed on the company premises in an underground water tank with a capacity of 700,000 l.
The range of around 250 items is sold through pharmacies , cosmetic studios, health and wellness facilities and online shops in German-speaking countries. In addition, Biomaris operates 25 of its own shops, mostly within the respective spa centers and wellness baths in German seaside resorts on the North and Baltic Sea coasts and on the islands, as well as its own research and cosmetics institute in Bremen. Internationally, the company is represented in 27 countries including Japan , Saudi Arabia , Thailand , South Korea and Israel .
Walter Brachmann GmbH & Co. KG is the legal owner of the Maris and Biomaris brands and limited partner of Biomaris GmbH & Co. KG . The management of the company is incumbent on Biomaris Verwaltungsgesellschaft Brachmann mbH as general partner .
Biomaris employed a total of 74 people and two trainees in the 2015 financial year and achieved a gross profit of 9.3 million euros.
