Birgit Vosskühler

Birgit Voßkühler (born April 23, 1963 ) is a German judge . She has been President of the Hamburg Constitutional Court since February 2020 .

Life

After graduating from the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium in Osnabrück in 1982, Vosskühler began studying law at the Philipps University of Marburg that same year . In 1984 she moved to the University of Hamburg . In 1988 she passed her first legal examination in Hamburg. From 1989 to 1992 she was a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law . After completing her legal preparatory service in Hamburg, she passed the Great State Examination in September 1993. Then she joined the Hamburg Justice Service on December 1, 1993.

Vosskühler became a judge at the Hamburg Labor Court on December 1, 1996 and its vice-president on October 1, 2008. On March 19, 2013 she was appointed presiding judge at the Hamburg Regional Labor Court , and became its vice-president on February 1, 2017. From 1995 to 2008 she also held teaching positions at the University of Hamburg. She is also the managing director of the German Labor Court Association .

Vosskühler was elected by the Hamburg Parliament as a representative member on June 4, 2014 and a member of the Hamburg Constitutional Court on March 3, 2016 . On January 29, 2020, she was elected President of the Constitutional Court. She took office on February 1, 2020. She is the first woman in this office and at the same time the first female president in the field of labor justice.
